Commercial Description:
This Belgian style Strong Dark Ale has a tawny brown color and aromas of banana and spice that dominate the initial bouquet of the beer. Lean malt flavors blend perfectly with fruit driven characteristics created by the classic Belgian yeast which fermented this ale. The alcohol content is deceptively smooth just like its sister beer Damnation. Brewed just once a year for a release in January.

Bottle. Batch 005. Pours ruby with thick, dense beige head. Aroma freshly-baked dark bread, cherries, orange peel, with subtle herbal hop scent throughout. Intense flavor, thick caramel malts, slightly sweet, nuanced roasted bitter flavors punctuate this. Finish has lingering oily bitterness and the slightest bit of alcohol burn. It coheres like a genuine belgian, well-balanced, excellent palate.

Bottle from the Ross (aka pillow biter). Pours a beautiful deep cherry brown with a tan head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, raisen, and brown sugary malts. This has a solid medium body with a rich earthy texture. Flavor of belgian candi sugar, raisens, and yeast. Mildly sweet and mineral finish. No alcohol flavors detected. Well crafted, but very simple. Nothing overly complex going on, but then again, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Bottle from Droop49. Hazy orangeish brown color with plenty of yeast floaties. Faint rotten banana and alcohl in the aroma, not much else. Flavor much the same but with some dubbel/quad qualities. Faint dark fruit, residuel candi sugar, decent caramel/toffee backbone. Overall decent brew, just muddled at times.

Batch 002. Light banana and huge chocolate nose. Slight acidity in the flavor but not in a sour beer kind of way, more of a dark malt contribution. Dark rye bread, deep fruit and a lingering wine like finish come together for a great beer.

Batch 5 (also have a few batch 2s that I need to crack, or perhaps save). This one has a nice cloudy brown color with a nice head. Aroma is dominated by raisin/plum/fig, dark bread, and a really nice belgian ale yeast smell. Flavor is nice and bready/yeasty/sweet. Fruits are noticeable up front, mostly raisin and plum with some bready and sugary qualities mid way through. Also getting some light smokiness and winey/earthy flavors here. Really nice mouthfeel and a dynamite finish. Another winner from Russian River.

750 ml corked/caged bottle. Batch 004. Poured a clear brown-orange color. Head was off white and left some lace behind. Aroma was of toasted bread with whiffs of black licorice and a hint of alcohol. Ample carbonation, but a bit thin. Slightly sweet on the tongue with white wine, clove, and subdued brown sugar flavors. Pretty good stuff.
