Commercial Description:
Is it beer, or is it wine? "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The "Bret" gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.

Pours a clear amber color with thin white head. Aroma dominated by tart oak character and light fruit. Soft carbonation up front with a huge oak flavor that is balanced by nice light fruit flavor. Hints of grape, cherry strawberry throughout. Creamy medium-bodied.

Tap @ Belmont Station... Poured a vibrant golden with a thick, white head that retained a decent size throughout enjoying this tasty beverage. Aroma was wildly funky and yeasty with fruits and spices. The Bret was brilliant in this one. Palate was perfect with that usually dryness from a sour and was very refreshing. Flavors of grains and lots of fruits -- lemon citrus, very sweet with spices -- almost like anise. This beer was like liquid candy, bretty and tangy.

Pours a straw yellow color with a rich soapy white head. Aroma of lemon, funk, and yeast. Flavor is tart, funky, with vinous, sour and hints of oak in each sip. Another high end offering from Russian River.

Courtesy of TampaBrew. Pours hazy dirty sand with thin white head. The aroma has white grapes, a touch of lemon, some mild notes of hay, malts, grains and some sour and tart notes. The taste is thin, fresh, and crisp with some grains and malts moving into light color skin grapes and then tart notes. I get some acidity and tartness heading into the finish as it evens out and comes to the end of the taste.

Thanks to TampaBrew for sharing this one. Pours hazy yellow with a white head. Nose is vinegar, light malt, tart citrus, lemon, and brett. Flavor is similar with lots of citrus and vinegar; also a tart wine barrel presence. Medium body beer that lingers with brett and tart. These guys are the the masters of Sour Beers. Good job, Vinnie.

Bottle shared at Moosetoberfest 09. Poured a hazy golden yellow with a smaller fizzy white head. Aroma is great with lots of sour fruity funky notes, lots of sour peach and apricott. Mediu bodied with very very lively carbonation, some champagne characteristics from all the carbonation. Flavor was slightly vinous, awfully sour, slightly funky and fruity and a hint of oak. Really nice stuff, nah this is great stuff.

Batch 3 bottle. Huge cork pop. Strong amber with big, dense white head. Nose is beautifully sharp. Wine and light funkiness on the nose. vinegar tartness hinting behind. I’m already salivating. Super sharp tart citrus. Light and dry. Grapes, lemon, champagne-like. Maybe cherry? Dry bitter finish. Leaves earthy funkiness.

Served on tap at O’brien’s TION night in a 13oz Chimay. I’ve had this in bottle (batch 003) on several occasions, and found that I didn’t enjoy it on tap as much. The oak comes through, and the beer really lives up to its description (is it a beer? is it a wine?). Blonde in color, big white head lacing. Medium sourness, tart fruits, oak, lemon come through. Medium bodied, dry, refreshing. Very good.
