Commercial Description:
Is it beer, or is it wine? "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The "Bret" gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.

Batch 002

7/30/2009: Russian River Temptation... Aroma: Moderately sour with some maltiness and subtle oxidation. Appearance: Cloudy and opaque marigold color with a large, foamy, light yellow head; hanging lacing. Flavor: Dry, floral sourness, slight creamy cherry oakiness (like wet wood), extremely balanced. Palate: Medium-light, well-carbonated but not fizzy, somewhat calm actually. Overall: Damn fine and super well-balanced.

Tap @ Toronado. A golden ale aged in French oak Chardonnay barrels for one year. Hazy golden color with a foamy white head. Cider and lambic aroma with citrus, peach and a dry must. Slightly dry with a sweet finish.

"French oak chardonnay barrels", eh? I smell it once the cork comes out. Lovely pale amber color, nearing orange, completely cloudy, witha thick, sturdy snowy cushion of foam above. Potent aromatics, screaming sour from afar....on closer inspection, yup, that’s tart, with citrus and spice squeaking in...deep, heady stuff....beautiful. Sourness is the main game in the mouth, blasting the tongue, then fading gently. Bracingly tart. Then smooth, but never releasing the hold of the tart, accompanied by some fruit and a bit of spice. Nice. Full-bodied and fresh. Zesty, snappy, tangy...quite an accomplishment, matching the quality of Belgian ales so well that if you didn’t know, you’d swear this bottle crossed an ocean. Fine and mellow, this tempting ale. Delightful. Delicious. D’lovely.

Lemon gold, light haze, small, fading head. Barnyard aroma with a bit of a wine note. Flavor was barnyard, wood, moldy hay. Really nice to see a beer like this being made over here. Tasty. The wife loved it. Not as much depth of flavor as some Belgian examples of brett driven beer, but still qutie good. Better than my written description indicates.

Batch 002 bottle purchased from Ledger’s Liquors in Berkeley, CA. Opens as a moderate gusher. An ounce or two spilled over my counter. Woody, oaky, sour-ish aroma. Not nearly as sour or acidity in the aroma as the Jolly Pumpkin Oro that I just had. Some slight metallic aromas also come through. Barnyardy. Moderately hazy golden-orange body with a smallish white head and generous lacing. Mildly sour, acidic start which turns bready, biscuity, and malty later on. This beer has some light bitterness to finish. Some butter is present later on as well. Quite drinkable. Much moreso than the JP that I just rated. A very good beer. I’d like to try this side by side with beatification.

07.16.05 Tap at BCTC. Light haze, golden, minimal head. Bretty and herbal plus some cracker. Light and crisp. Grassy. Some white grape. Anise, woody, dry. Hell yeah!

Bottled-conditioned sample generously donated by Vinnie Cilurzo for a Belgian-style beer tasting in New Mexico. Hazy, deep golden body with a clean white head. Nose is very horsey plus overripe pineapple. Funkier than hell and I dig it. Oaky, white wine qualities come through strong in the flavor and combine very nicely with the ale yeast and brett properties. Some sourness in the flavor and a lingering, delicate bitterness in the finish. Complex and very interesting. This is what beer is about.

Damn. I really should be more careful on what I open when I get home from work. A huge foamy bone-white head three fingers tall forms atop this hazy orange beer. Citrus and sour brett on the aroma with a faint lactic character and a hint of wine earthiness. Intensly sour flavor with hints of lemon, grape, cheese, and barnyard funk. A satisfyingly drying mouthfeel yields a long sour aftertaste. Most excellent.
