Commercial Description:
Is it beer, or is it wine? "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The "Bret" gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.

Corked 330ml. Pours hazy golden with a thin white head. Nice huge brett aroma, lots of sourness and hint of white wine. Very nice subtle mouthfeel. Nice flavors sour apples, lemon, chardonnay. Not overly sour, which I like. The oak and mild pepper comes out on the finish. This lingers and coats the back of the mouth like an earthy white wine. Very well crafted beer.

Batch 002, purchased at Once Upon a Vine, Richmond. A luminous body with a champagne-like effervescence (and mouthfeel!). Deep golden, a thin but intense carbonation. You can smell the chardonnay immediately in the nose, with the gentlest of oak (thankfully subtle). A slight hint of mellowed grape or even cherry in the first sip, but then it’s a lovely dry tartness, with a slight hint of bitter like you get from orange peels (funny given that RR is ensconced in the land of rich, buttery Chards too). A delightful beer, one of the finest American renditions of Belgian beer.

Batch 002. Thanks to axilla. Pours a hazy yellow with a big white head. Sweet and slightly sour. Quite heavy aromas of horse blanket and earth. But also sour apples and wood. Medium to full bodied. Lively carbonation. Bitter and sour finish.
Batch 001. Pours a clear golden with a white head. Mellow sweetness and sourness.Kinda like Duchesse du Bourgogne but less spicy. Hints of vinegar.

Batch 002. Slightly hazy, pale body with medium sized off-white head. The aroma is heavy brett, pineapple, cobwebs, light horseblanket, some peach and honey. The flavor is slightly sweet, mildly tart, pineapple, peach, pear, green apple and slightly herbal. Medium body with soft carbonation and a soft and smooth texture, just a touch tannic on the finish. Lovely.

Batch One, 375cc bottle. Pours a rather clear, medium amber color with an inch tall white head after pouring. The head slowly subsides but never fades out and leaves fantastic sheets of lacing behind. Aroma is pleasantly lambic-like. Full of Brettanomyces. Slight notes of white wine shine through along with hints of oak and tannins. Medium bodied with a lively carbonation. Moderate acidity, ample bitterness pair well with the slightly sour tastes of Brett. in action. Wonderfully crafted, a pleasure to drink.

Batch 002. Bottle shared by MI2CA. Pours clear straw yellow with some nice white head. The nose comes off as tangy sour cream with a bit of fruit. The flavor is sort of yogurt-ish. I get some white wine character as well. Light body with sprite carbonation and a bone dry finish. Pretty good. stuff. Thanks for sharing Ted.

Gold color. Sour, dry aroma. Taste is nice and tart, lemony and bitter. Balance is alright. Not sure the oak barrels did much for this.
