Commercial Description:
Is it beer, or is it wine? "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The "Bret" gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.

12.7 oz bottle. Batch 001. My 50th rating! Hazy golden pear with a thin white head. Incredible aroma of pear and banana. Starts with a high carb mouthfeel that melts into sour apple and fresh lemon juice. Oak keeps it from getting too tart. Now I’m starting to regret having this for my 50th. Hoping I can find another to age for a few years.

From the giant ƙL?) batch 2 bottle opened by Vinnie at the brewpub during RBSG09. Hazy blond with a big white head. Funky, grainy, and tart lemon aroma. The flavor was a pretty straight-forward tart lemon with light grainy malt and light oaky vinous character. Some age seems to have smoothed this out, though I can’t say that I’ve had it right after release. Medium-light body with medium carbonation. More mellow and drinkable than I was expecting actually. Very nice stuff. Draught at Russian River, batch 4. The grapes and sourness are much more forward here than the batch 2 that I had a couple months ago. Very vinous and oaky with a sharp acidity. Highly carbonated and champaigne-like. Everything is more vidid and less rounded in this fresh sample. I may like the aged stuff better but this is still great.

750ml bottle from Bman1113VR, thanks Andrew! Pours a nice deep gold with a frothy white head. Tart cherry, grapes and wine barrel aroma. Smooth tart malt body, oak, chardonnay and a light fruitiness come through in the taste. Imminently drinkable, like a fine wine. Delicious.

3rd FoBAB. Hazy, golden body with a huge, fluffy white head. White grapes, oranges, warming alcohol, old oak, horseblanket, hay--dry, soothing and terrific. The body is spectacular, with soft, active carbonation that lays on the tongue like a wave of velvet. Cool, bright fruits, light sweetness, excellent Brett character and light woodiness. Tart acidic character comes on as well, leaving that oh-so-cool mouthpucking sensation of joy. What an awesome beer and an awesome experience. Here’s to many more Brett classics from Russian River!

Andrew and I verticalled batch 1 and batch 2 6/16/07. thanks to drewbeerme for batch 1. .... Batch 02 pours a clear orange yellow white head. Nose is malt sour grapes, wine, already seeming smoother in comparison to 01. Flavors of sour tart grapes, funky, earthy, and cleaner than its older brother. 8/4/8/4/17= 4.1

Batch 01 pours a clear orange with a white head. Aroma of sour grapes, white wine, citrus, yeast, a little bit of funk. The nose on this is much more winey and a little more all over the place. Sour grape flavors, more funky, yeasty, smooth darker flavors, oaky, dirty, a little more complex. 9/4/9/3/17 = 4.3
.......Batch 02 is cleaner easier to drink and more compact than the wilder oaky/earthier Batch 01. But I think I prefer that wilder 01 to the 02.

002 batch. Pours a cloudy yellow golden color with a thick frosty white head. A bit of lacing. Aroma of tartness, sour oak barrels, fresh yeast and pepper. Taste is very tart with a nice oak barrel flavor. Fresh yeast abound and it finishes peppery. Very nice for the style.

Batch #1. Hazy gold. Small, dense white head settles to a thin layer. Aroma: sour yeast, oak, piney citrus, crisp malt, wheat?, and vinegared fruit. Same flavor with some white wine notes as it warms. Medium/full, banaced body. Dry finish. Excellent. Have to try more from this brewery.
