Commercial Description:
Is it beer, or is it wine? "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The "Bret" gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.

This is a beautiful glass of beer. Effervescence and color of a glass of Champagne with the head of, say, Duvel. Nose is tart and sweet at the same time, with a touch of oak. I love the complexity of the flavor. It starts out quite tart, but under lying sweetness that soon takes over to produce a very nice mid and finish. Great mouthfeel. Smooth yet at the same time lively on the tongue. I think this one is the most interesting of Vinnie’s sours.

bottle.....appearance: hazy light orange with an at first gushing head that reduces to a spotty white film....aroma: chardonnay whine aroma along with white grapes and some tart citrus fruits....taste: first sip was hugely sour but that tended to diminish with each following one. sourness was lemony and lightly citrus, maybe some sour apple. it was very much enhanced by the oak. medium body and full of lively carbonation that made the mouth tingle. crisp, dry, and very refreshing i can see why the desciption adds some reference to sparkling wine and champagne....a fine beer from the folks at Russian River.

On tap at Falling Rock. Pours hazy yellow with nice white head. Aroma of sour grapes, funk, fruit, oak. Pretty awesome aroma. Flavor is a nice prickly sour. Tart grapes, light funk and oak. Dry finish. Absolutely thrilled I got to drink this one.

This is a nice big sour ale. Complex and flavorful. On tap at Stone. Pours a deep hazy gold, with thick off-white head. Tastes like a strong gueuze. citrus lemon zest, sour apple, white grape, oak, funk, and some dry bitterness. Excellent sour, quite complex.

Another sampled ten (or more) times over at GABF. I have a bottle of this don’t I? I think I am happy now.

Hazy buff color with a fat white head. Lemony horse blanket aroma with some pepper and minerals. Sweeter in flavor than the aroma would suggest. Tart and fruity with some aldehydes. Quite spicy. Satisfying body that rolls across the palate. Finishes a bit flat but still very clean and palate cleansing. Exceptional ale.

Powerful tart sour dry aroma, jumps out of the glass. Hazy gold, strong white head. Reminds me of gauze, both dry and soft, nearly medicinal. I had forgotten about the chardonnay barrels and probably would have noticed it had I looked for it. It doesn’t swirl with complexity but it’s a great beer that I couldn’t drink slowly.

Caged and corked 375 courtesy of pantanap. Thanks a bunch Kan. Pours a deep golden color, mostly opaque, with a medium large white head that slowly deflates. Loads of funky brett aromas. Light acid, leather, old books, rice wine vinegar. Starts off much sweeter than I had anticipated, with light caramel notes. Texture is gorgeous, lively small carbonation, but nothing overbearing. Light sourness, gentle, not bracing. Lots of subtlety here.
