Commercial Description:
Is it beer, or is it wine? "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The "Bret" gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.

Batch 002. Cloudy yellow with a large head. Aroma of oak, white wine and sour yeast. Flavor is vinous, with oak and some sour towards the back end. Somewhat sticky texture. Medium/light body. The flavors all work and balance with each other wonderfully.

Bottle Batch #3 courtesy tpd975. Pours a slightly hazy golden with a one finger white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is very vinous and citric with oak and spicy funky brett. Taste is the same as aroma with tons of tart over ripe citrus and funky yeast. Medium mouthfeel with a good amount of spicy brett and acidity and a dry finish. Another damn fine brew from RR.

Batch 1 bottle at Grand Tasting. Pours an orangish mango color, with creamy head and nice lacing. Funky cider nose, tart, apples, some cherries, wheat. Tart flavors, sweet fruit, noticeable hops, some sticky malts. Yum. Dry mouthfeel, very good, tartness is fantastically balanced with hops.

2-24-08 and 3-21-08 bottles shared at tastings
(I got the very dreggy pour)
Very cloudy yellow in color with little to no head. Smell is very sweet and floral. Nice sour bite in the flavor and finish. Sweetly sour and yet dry on the finish.
The other pours from the same bottle were quite different - clear yellow, small taste and little oomph.
However, my pour was wonderful - not too over the top and very worth while. I would love to try it again!

375 ml bottle acquired via trade and shared with my buddy Lemur. Poured an effervescent golden color with big white champagne bubbles. Aroma was full of lemons and horseblanket and some light oak. Flavor is sour lemon, yeast, funk and light oak. Thin to medium mouthfeel, dances across the tongue at the end. Another winner from RR.

A beautiful hazy orange color, light yeast, Oak, sweet & sour green apple, a tangy acidity and bubble gum. An interesting northern France farmhouse ale tartness to it. A malty sweetness but the “tang” tips the scale to the dry side. I’m not a big sour beer fan but this was crisp & enjoyable!

Bottled. Batch 001. Pours a murky yellow orange color with a sizable, frothy white head. Subtle, yeasty aroma with notes of the brett. The taste is sharp and fruity with notes of tartness and wine. Finishes with a bit of acidity and more of the fruity notes. Great now but I’m guessing this will be outstanding with a little age on it.
