Commercial Description:
Is it beer, or is it wine? "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The "Bret" gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.

12oz corked bottle. Pours a light golden yellow color, slightly cloudy, with a medium sized pure white head that slowly dissipates to leave nice lacing. Aroma is all about the funk, with sour cherries, leather, honey, white grapes, and a hint of dry wood. Flavor is more subdued than the aroma would lead one to expect. Fair amount of dry woodyness, malt, touch of honey. Light palate with fairly evident carbonation. Finish is rather dry, clean, with a subtle but tangible bitterness. A very nice and interesting beer. The aroma is very intense and interesting, however the flavor doesn’t quite deliver on the aroma’s promise. Still, a beer worthy of distinction.

Pour is a hazy straw color with a huge white head. Aroma of sour funk, oak and subtle wine. Flavor is quite sour and very full. Smooth, smooth, smooth. Could drink this all day.

Bottle at a tasting, from iowaherkeye. Sweet pickled aromas with a golden whitish head. Sweetish lambic like flavors. Creamy with goo carbonation. Well balanced and enjoyable. Thanks Joey.

Pours hazy gold with a huge white head, some effervescence, and a whole lot of lacing. Interesting aroma. Smells like a good Gueuze mixed with an Orval. The main aroma is a funky sourness, but there’s also some citrus and oak. Some phenols come out with a swirl. Tastes a lot like a toned-down Gueuze. There’s a lot of sourness up front and some standard Belgian Ale flavors (cross between an Orval and an Ommegang Rare Vos) backing it up. Nice, subtle oak flavor, too. Very unique. A fuller body would make this one incredible.

Bottle, pours hazy buttery yellow - I think I got the yeast shot at the bottom. Tart lemony and a little floral aroma. Citrusy and spiced flavors, a little oak, and some strong wine characters. Very acidic and tart. Some funk in there too. I liked this, but this would be hard for me to drink a lot of - just a bit too acidic.

bottle thanks to Secret Santa. Batch 3. Pours a faded orange with a huge white head. Nose was of sour lemon. Taste was of sweet, sour apples. Mouthfeel was tart and dry with lots of carbonation. OK, I’ve been trying to get into the sour craze, but just didn’t see it until now. This one was not extremely sour and had plenty of good taste other than just sourness. Of the sour beers I’ve had this one is the best. This one may have converted me. Liked it a lot.
