Commercial Description:
Is it beer, or is it wine? "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The "Bret" gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.

Personal Milestone: California Rating #100 (out of 1874)!
Pouring a hazy golden body with a pillowy white head, this has a lot of the funkiness that makes a gueuze fun, without the intensity. This Beligian ale has an aroma of wilting flowers, straw, citric fruits, vanilla, oak, alcohol, and some interesting spices. The mouthfeel is soft and a bit grainy. The flavor carries over from the aroma, adding that Brettanomyces acidity that makes a brew interesting. The finish is a face-puckering sourness. Very, very nice.

Lightly hazed golden color with an off white, soft beaten egg white head. Fairly thick looking brew with the initial pour having slow meandering bigger bubbles. Lightly vinous aroma, surrounded by cobwebs, lemon zest, wet oak and dry cement. Not as thick as it looks, but substantial and yet light on the tongue. The warmer this get the chardonnay really comes out, but does not take over, justs adds the brett and drives things home. Complex, yet simple. Smooth, yet a mild edge. The balance to me is near perfect. Malt, oak, chardonnay, brett. Why did I only order one bottle? For me this is like an oak aged Duvel, very nice.

Bottle@SpontaneousWeekend08. This is abolutely great stuff! Strong powerful aroma of bourbon, malts, apple and light alcoholic. Hazy, yellow color, off-white head, good lace. Sweet, sourish, malty, apple, bitter, very smooth mouthfeel. Great balance. Feels more alcoholic than just 7.25% ABV. Thanks mjames for sharing this!

Bottle picked up at O’Briens: Pale golden color with a thick white head and adequate lacing. The nose is tart and spicy with some citric funky brett character and a light pilsner malt and hop note. The flavor is nice and tart with a well balanced fruity character; cherry with light grapefruit and a nutty finish. Light body, well built, full of different flavors and complexity. Nice.

Bottle, courtesy a generous Dane (sorry I forget who), May 2006 at Kobehavnske Oldage. Hazy yellow colour. More lambic-like than blonde, with lots of sour acidity but less farmyard funk than might be experienced in a lambic. Lots of citrus but also oaky vanilla - an unusual combination but one that works surprisingly well. There’s also a tannic edge reminiscent of a cider. An intriguing and enjoyable beer but not as challenging as I expected.

Bottle. Batch 003. Pours a hazy pale yellow color with a small white head. Has a fruity tart spicy yeasty citrus aroma. Sweetish yet tart yesty spicy citrus flavor with some hints from the oak. Has a fruity spicy and slightly tart oaky finish with some hints of citrus in the aftertaste. Very nice!

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured cloudy yellow color with a large frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium to heavy citrus and yeast aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and lively carbonation and average particles. Medium to heavy sweet & sour flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. I shared this with freinds and enjoyed the beer.

Big thanks to DaveCooks for this one. The pour is hazy layered dark straw/deep golden color with a great 2-finger white fluffy head. The aroma is Bretty, with that oaky funk common to gueuzes, plus some citrus (orange zest, lemon) and honey malts, plus floral dry spices and coriander. Complex aroma. The flavor is tart, very gueuzy, but with more sweetness in the apricotty oaky fruit, white wine grape, and citrus components (more citrus than fruit). The palate is dense and extremely complex, and the beer retains a tart citric frutiness as it warms, alond with the dry floral spiciness. This beer was so good it was all I could do not to chug the whole damned thing! This one is worthy of a top 50 slot.
