Commercial Description:
Our Divine Reserve is a series of single batch beers, each brewed with a completely different recipe. The batches are identified by the number on the neck label. There is no particular theme to the beers, although it can be assumed that most all of them will be big. Many will benefit from being aged. Reserve No. 1: Barleywine Cases Made: 327 Date Brewed: August 18, 2005 Date Bottled: October 17, 2005 Original Gravity: 1.099 Final Gravity: 1.027 Alcohol: 9.3% ABV This big, barleywine was brewed with pale Maris Otter malt as a base. This was supplemented with Munich and Chocolate malts which gave the beer a very chocolatey flavor in the fermenter although it rounded out considerably by the time it was bottled. It was heavily hopped in both the kettle (with Northern Brewer and Cascades) and in the fermenter (with Saaz). When tasted in the fermenter, the hops were very aggressive but after two months of aging, they mellowed. The beer was fermented at 72 F with our Saint Arnold yeast giving the beer a full, creamy mouthfeel with pleasant fruit. This batch was unfiltered which, combined with the high protein Maris Otter malt, makes for a very hazy beer. The first few cases were packaged without an in-line hop filter which resulted in some hop particulate in those bottles. After about 30 cases (and the bottling line being gummed up), we put the hop filter in-line. This filter is very loose and only removes hop bits. While this beer is ready to be enjoyed immediately, it should develop well in the bottle over time.

Shared at C-Bus 9 by moejuck: Bottle: Pours a murky brown with a light tan head, and some sludge. Aroma, caramel, fruits, and brown sugar. Flavor, caramel, nutty notes, brown sugar, some oxidation, and earthy notes. Probably just a bit past it’s prime.

Thanks to the generous Lumpy for giving this bottle to me. Pours a very dark and cloudy brown with a nice off-white head. The aroma on this has become a victim of oxidation, but it’s not TOO bad yet. Some sherry and tea with some toffee/caramel and grape. Tastes of sweet brown sugar, toast, tea, and sherry. Finishes with a buttery toast hop flavor, with remnants of citrus poking through. Pretty decent stuff, but I wish I would have tried it fresh. I don’t this has been aging very well, cause there shouldn’t have been THAT much oxidation.

Bottle, thanx to JP Hop House. Pours a very hazy brown color with a small off white head. The aroma is very hoppy with hints of caramel. The taste is a sweet caramel and fruit notes. Decent lacing on this one. A well done barley wine from saint arnold.

Finally...I got to taste this beer. Shared with theisti and KAggie 97. Thanks KAggie! Cloudy orange pour with lots of floaties (I got the ass end of the pour). No head. Fresh grass clippings right up front...turning to hoppy malts and very little finish. Not bad.

12 oz. bottle very graciously shared by KAggie97 with myself and Zinister at the "Double Tree Houston" tasting. Pour is a murky orange with a very small slightly off white head. Aroma is some caramel sweet malt. Really nice nose. Taste has some sweetness up front, middle has a bit of black licorice, and the finish is very fast and dry. Some metallic, resiney taste in the after taste. Nice Yin - yang balance. In fact, that very symbol appeared in KAggie97’s glass at one point. I was thrilled to be able to try this one, thanks again Kevin!

Nice caramel red pour. Nose is quite yeasty with figgy aroma. Candied/rummed fruits. Flavour continues the dark fruits, with a bitter roast chocolate note, and some well balanced heat.

Bottle from Lumpy (I think). Pours out a brownish red color. Small tan head all around the glass. Smell is sugar, hops, some dark malts. Taste is smooth and slightly alcoholic. Rather bitter and possibly astringent. Not really the best barley wine I have come across, but it will do.
