Dark raisins and plum, wood and vanilla. Taste is wonderful. Aged wood notes with ripened fruit. Dark plum with a touch of raisins. Vanilla alcohol rounds out the finish. Finish dries but has the fantastic sweetness that previous was the beer. Lovely. TChrome (1299), Bedford, Texas, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 27, 2005 Beer pour clear at first, then grows murky as the yeast from the bottom of the bottle clouds things up. Color is red/orange amber with a totally retained off white head. Aroma is quite compelling with lots of dark richness and notes of fig, candy sugar, hops, and some alcohol burn. Also smell of being aged even though it is very young. The flavor really hits some marks for me. Unlike so many barleywines, this one is not sickly sweet. It does begin a bit sweet, this give way to a nice hop sharpness. There is also a bit of roasted malt that fits nicely with the other flavors. This is a tremendous first effort at a single batch bottling for Saint Arnold. I can’t wait for the rest of the series. Prost Brock!! ChristianSA (368), Copenhagen, Denmark
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Oct 22, 2006 Bottle from Lumpy. Muddy brown with a small tan head requiring some effort in the pour. Wonderful complex nose with bready notes followed by citrus and burned sugar and dark malts. Pleasant acidic nose from the hops, but it comes through almost as lactic sourness. Bready flavor with chocolate and raisins leading to a dry hoppy finish. Bitter, but well-balanced. The alcohol cannot be detected. Mellow, smooth mouth feel due to the low carbonation. Highly recommended. Thank you for this treat Lumpy!! Fratto (740), Arlington, Texas, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 25, 2009 Bottle thanks to Zinnister. Aroma is Peppermint, malts, alcohol, chocolate, cinnamon, and dark fruit. Wow, a lot to smell. Taste is more peppermint (really?) and lots of roasted malts. Finish is dark and delicious. scraff (1946), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 2, 2006 Dark turbid rust, thin light tan creamy head. A fantastic nose of candided tropical fruit, brown sugar, musty caramel, and further hints of citrus. Had a cask- like quality throughout with more brown sugar tones that mingled well with mango, apricot, caramel and spruce notes. Well balanced to the final drop. Full bodied, soft carbonation and smooth, bittersweet finish. This BW kicks serious ass. A great late night sipper. Thanks Fly! egajdzis (3629), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 22, 2007 Poured a lightly hazy red brown color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of dried fruits, sticky caramel malts, citrus, light floral hops, with some pine as well. Taste of more caramel malts, dark fruits, roast, light chocolate, pine, tobacco, and light alcohol in the finish. Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 26, 2006 I just got 4 more bottles purchased slightly against "recommendations" by the State of Texas, so I thought I’d open one of the 3 I finally got: Pour is deep amber with a nice dense tan head...also, huge yeasty chunks abound...smell is sweet and has some delicate citrus notes to it...definately has some hoppy piney notes too...taste is sweet up front and turns nicely hoppy, but not American Barleywine hoppy, as it is still rich and chewy in the mouth...just a nice 70-30 hop/malt flavor...nice slightly sweet finish...
