Commercial Description:
Our Divine Reserve is a series of single batch beers, each brewed with a completely different recipe. The batches are identified by the number on the neck label. There is no particular theme to the beers, although it can be assumed that most all of them will be big. Many will benefit from being aged. Reserve No. 1: Barleywine Cases Made: 327 Date Brewed: August 18, 2005 Date Bottled: October 17, 2005 Original Gravity: 1.099 Final Gravity: 1.027 Alcohol: 9.3% ABV This big, barleywine was brewed with pale Maris Otter malt as a base. This was supplemented with Munich and Chocolate malts which gave the beer a very chocolatey flavor in the fermenter although it rounded out considerably by the time it was bottled. It was heavily hopped in both the kettle (with Northern Brewer and Cascades) and in the fermenter (with Saaz). When tasted in the fermenter, the hops were very aggressive but after two months of aging, they mellowed. The beer was fermented at 72 F with our Saint Arnold yeast giving the beer a full, creamy mouthfeel with pleasant fruit. This batch was unfiltered which, combined with the high protein Maris Otter malt, makes for a very hazy beer. The first few cases were packaged without an in-line hop filter which resulted in some hop particulate in those bottles. After about 30 cases (and the bottling line being gummed up), we put the hop filter in-line. This filter is very loose and only removes hop bits. While this beer is ready to be enjoyed immediately, it should develop well in the bottle over time.

Aroma was that of strawberries and a milk-chocolate almond milkshake. Tons of caramel and coffee...nutty with a bit of whole-grain cracker. Nice sticky lacing. Prickly alcholic finish seemed to clash with the hops but it worked as it warmed. Tasty. Thanks to fly for the bottle.

Bottled. An unclear brown beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, alcohol, brown sugar, and nuts, leading to a dry woody finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Bottle, with HUGE thanks to Zinister. You rock bro! Hazy reddish hue. Lovely aroma. Dark raisins and plum, wood and vanilla. Taste is wonderful. Aged wood notes with ripened fruit. Dark plum with a touch of raisins. Vanilla alcohol rounds out the finish. Finish dries but has the fantastic sweetness that previous was the beer. Lovely.

Bottle thanks to Zinnister. Aroma is Peppermint, malts, alcohol, chocolate, cinnamon, and dark fruit. Wow, a lot to smell. Taste is more peppermint (really?) and lots of roasted malts. Finish is dark and delicious.

Pours a deep brown into the glass with a small beige head. Aroma is dark fruit with a bit of chocolate. Flavor has a surprisingly large amount of chocolate present. Really tasty, but definitely much different than the barley wines I’ve had.

12oz bottle courtesy of KAggie97 poured into a snifter. Pours a dark, murky brown with hints of orange around the edges with a decent beige head that leaves a collar and spotty lacing on the way down. The aroma is fairly mellow with lots of sweet caramel malts and even hints of citrus aroma. There are some dark fruits in the nose as well. The taste is a tad better than the aroma and has a quick (and faint) hop hint up front. Outside of that, it’s really about the sweet caramel malts and toffee with some raisins and a bit of woody dryness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with good carbonation and very smooth and slick going down. This is a decent barleywine that has definitely held up well over time. It’s not as complex as some of the world-class barleywines out there but it’s definitely drinkable despite probably seeing better days.

Bottle thanks to lumpy. The smell is malty, decent hop bitterness, fruits, yeast, and nice. The look is cloudy, some sediment, not much of its beige head, and amber in color. The taste is alcohol, malts, some hops, pine, and decent.

a huge thanks goes out to lumpy for providing me with this. poured a murky brown with sediment and a thin beige head. aroma of caramel, brown sugar, dark fruits, and when started warming some chocolate stood out. flavors were caramel, dark fruits, brown sugar, hops, chocolate on the backend, and alcohol. medium body with light-medium carbonation and a nice bitter. this was an artwork among the DR series and another huge thanks goes out to lumpy for this one.
