Commercial Description:
Reserve No. 2: Abbey American Quadruppel Cases Made: 787 Date Brewed: April 26, 2006 Date Bottled: July 18, 2006 Original Gravity: 1.093 Final Gravity: 1.022 Alcohol: 9.3% ABV Description: This big beer goes beyond existing styles. It is best described as an Abbey American quadruppel. It was brewed with a combination of Maris Otter, Munich, Victory and Special B malts. This beer is also the first time we have used an adjunct, in this case brown sugar, in the brewkettle. It is hopped with Perle, Liberty and Saaz, going for a pleasant, balancing but not overly aggressive bitter. We then split the wort from the kettle into 2 fermenters, pitching one with an American Ale yeast and the other with a Belgian Trappist yeast. Near the end of fermentation, the tanks were combined to finish out. The beer was conditioned for 12 weeks and then packaged unfiltered. This beer has a nose of malt, fruit and spice with a light touch of hops. The taste is a combination of malt with a warming alcoholic feel, lots of fruit, light clove and spice and a very pleasant hop bitter. While this beer is ready to be enjoyed immediately, it should develop well in the bottle over time.

I finally get to try this beer that I saw on the shelf last year, but didn’t buy cause I had no idea what Divine Reserve was at the time. Pours a cloudy red copper, which looks great, but the head is very minimal. Lacing lasts, and it’s fun to watch those bubbles crawl to the surface. Somewhat subdued aroma of honey, caramel, bread, brown sugar, a little spice, cherries, and some alcohol. Tastes of brown sugar first, but then the yeasts become very apparent. There’s also caremel, bread, walnuts, and an unexpected light roast taste. Finishes lightly bitter and slightly yeasty with a nice mellow raisin flavor and toast. Though I can taste the yeast(s) easily, the beer doesn’t really finish dry, but it’s quite full flavored. Excellent beer. Thanks to Walt for the bottle.

Bronzed orange. Vigorous pour yields a densely packed ring of dirty-white bubbles. Decent aroma of peppery alcohol, plums, floral hops, bubblegum and honey-glazed pears. Subtle scents of clove and meaty yeast. Firm carbonation gently scrubs the palate. Rummy sweetness grips the palate but gives way to grainy alcohol which steadily sharpens. Floral hops and a muted plum fruitiness accompany the succulent caramelized-raisin malt sweetness which briefly aids in softening the warming alcohol. Vivid notes of sugar-dusted bubblegum enhance the sparse floral hops, but very little depth or character is detectable beneath the polished, albeit far too short-lived, maltiness. Due to the lack of depth, the clove and coriander begin to fatigue the palate halfway through the glass. Extremely short finish consists of mild clove, which accentuates the hot alcohol, as notes of caramelized sugar and juicy hops linger. Surprisingly clean and not overly yeasty, but sorely lacks depth (bouncy malt, specifically) and is too grainy, spicy and alcoholic. Really nice rendition, though. Thanks for the bottle, Kevin.

bottle, from trade with bu11zeye. Ok aroma, sweet. balsa, tad oxidized, tobacco, little fig, Hazed brownish orange color, small to no head, minor lace. Sweet fruity flavor, Autumn leaves, little dirt, sugar, little cherry & banana, Kind of bourbon taste. Medium body, smooth oily mouthfeel, bitter sweet finish. Just didn’t excite me as I sipped. I think the oxidized tasted took off the most points for me.

Pours a hazy burnt orange. Very light for a quad. Very lively sweet malt and orange nose. A touch of cinnamon as well. Tastes of sweet malts and bitter fruit. Tastes more like a tripel than a quad, I dont know how they can call this a quad. Some candy sugar and orange peel in the finish. Overall pretty good beer, just misidentified if you ask me.

Bottle shared with and courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a murky orange-brown-red (it’s a tough colour to nail) with a small diminishing off-white head. Nice aroma of slightly tart fruit, spices, herbal hops, sweet caramel malt, yeast and more...there’s quite a bit going on here. Flavour’s fruity, sweet and malty along with some alcohol (but not too much), herbal hops and yeast -- like the aroma, there’s a lot going on, it’s quite nice. Medium to full bodied. It’s perhaps a touch too sweet and boozy but it’s still a very nice version of the style and I enjoyed it -- well done!

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, my bottle from SecretSanta06. Poured murky peach-tinged orange brown, with a small slightly frothy off-white head. Mild aroma, dry peppery yeast, tart fruity malt, alcohol and even herbal/resin hops lingering around in there - muted, but fairly complex, increasing malt/spice character as it warms. Taste is very much as the nose - peppery/spicy hops & yeast blend with the fruity/brown sugar malt to keep the increasing alcohol presence contained. Thick, almost sludgey body, faintly tart, pretty bitter/astringent for something this malt and alcohol biased - medium long finish leaves hop bitterness on the tongue. Excellent attempt at the style - thanks, Lutheran!!!

Bottle: Courtesy of bu11zeye via trade. The aroma consists of lots of caramel and chocolate, dark fruits, brown sugar, clove, and hints of alcohol. It pours a cloudy reddish-orange with a small fizzy off-white head that quickly fades to a very fine ring along the outside edges of the glass. There is a lot of caramel up front with moderate plum and banana. There are light chocolate and fruit cake flavors that linger throughout in the background. The finish is lightly spicey (clove) with some light alcohol flavors that really balance well. The mouthfeel is syrupy with the perfect touch of alcohol burn that I enjoy in bigger beers. Very underrated in my opinion.

12 oz bottle. Misty sunset orange with a dash of foam. A quad? Apple juice and spicy dough. First sip tells you this is to be enjoyed slowly. Citrus honey, candied rose petals and caramel clove dissolve with a nice carb tang. Sticky, but not syrupy. Alcohol comes through in the aftertaste with green hops and yeast.
