Commercial Description:
Reserve No. 2: Abbey American Quadruppel Cases Made: 787 Date Brewed: April 26, 2006 Date Bottled: July 18, 2006 Original Gravity: 1.093 Final Gravity: 1.022 Alcohol: 9.3% ABV Description: This big beer goes beyond existing styles. It is best described as an Abbey American quadruppel. It was brewed with a combination of Maris Otter, Munich, Victory and Special B malts. This beer is also the first time we have used an adjunct, in this case brown sugar, in the brewkettle. It is hopped with Perle, Liberty and Saaz, going for a pleasant, balancing but not overly aggressive bitter. We then split the wort from the kettle into 2 fermenters, pitching one with an American Ale yeast and the other with a Belgian Trappist yeast. Near the end of fermentation, the tanks were combined to finish out. The beer was conditioned for 12 weeks and then packaged unfiltered. This beer has a nose of malt, fruit and spice with a light touch of hops. The taste is a combination of malt with a warming alcoholic feel, lots of fruit, light clove and spice and a very pleasant hop bitter. While this beer is ready to be enjoyed immediately, it should develop well in the bottle over time.

Clouded orange pour. Big alcohol smell with aged sweet notes. Smells fantastic. Nice sweet taste. Feel of alcohol on the finish. Tasty by far. Dry finish with a tingle. Still fantastic after all these years.

Bottle. Brown/copper color. Nose is full of caramel malt, dried fruit, and some light oxidation. Flavor is still good. Sweet caramel malt, some brown sugar, dark dried fruits and a touch of hops. Pretty damn good still.

Big thanks to KAggie97 for this rarity, poured into a tulip. This one pours a hazy orangish brown in the glass which shows as a bright, bright caramel orange when held up to the light. There is a small beige head that recedes to a collar fairly quickly and leaves spotty lacing. The aroma takes a little while to open up as it warms. It certainly features sweet caramel malts and brown sugar. But there is also plenty of dried sweet fruits, raisins and figs especially, along with a bit of alcohol burn in the nose. The taste is really nice with the backbone of caramel malts supporting a sweet mixture of dark fruits and brown sugar. The hops have all but faded and show only the faintest citrus hop presence at the outset. The finish is sugary sweet and lingers on the palate between sips. The mouthfeel is medium bodied yet almost syrupy in its consistency. The carbonation is very soft and lends to a coating of sweetness on the palate. The alcohol is very subtle but seems to build up gradually such that the final sips are much more boozy than the first. Overall, I’m pretty impressed with this one. I wouldn’t consider it a world class quad, but the taste is very good and it has aged extremely well and I didn’t get any oxidation in this one. A bit fuller body with more carbonation would have bumped it up a bit in my book.

Pours a cloudy dark copper with very little head. Aroma is all dates and candied fruits. Flavor is pretty much just more sweet dates with a very subtle nuttiness developing. Many thanks to MaltoMeal for this rarity.

12oz from MaltoMeal. Thank you Bill in helping this budding Quad whore, get another quad. Pours rich orange with a tan head. Nose is sweet and malty. Taste is certainly sweet with lots of caramel malt and a bit of chocolate I agree with Amy’s remarks in the rating below mine. Its oddly very boozy for the meager abv (for a quad). Also somewhat oxidized, probably past its prime.

Bottle from yopdoog, thanks Trevor! Pours a very murky brown with a thin white ring around the glass. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and strangely enough a little chocolate. A little hops and alcohol in the finish. Charateristic quad flavour until right at the finish where it gets a little "rummy". Good now but I imagine it was fantastic fresh.
