Commercial Description:
Reserve No. 2: Abbey American Quadruppel Cases Made: 787 Date Brewed: April 26, 2006 Date Bottled: July 18, 2006 Original Gravity: 1.093 Final Gravity: 1.022 Alcohol: 9.3% ABV Description: This big beer goes beyond existing styles. It is best described as an Abbey American quadruppel. It was brewed with a combination of Maris Otter, Munich, Victory and Special B malts. This beer is also the first time we have used an adjunct, in this case brown sugar, in the brewkettle. It is hopped with Perle, Liberty and Saaz, going for a pleasant, balancing but not overly aggressive bitter. We then split the wort from the kettle into 2 fermenters, pitching one with an American Ale yeast and the other with a Belgian Trappist yeast. Near the end of fermentation, the tanks were combined to finish out. The beer was conditioned for 12 weeks and then packaged unfiltered. This beer has a nose of malt, fruit and spice with a light touch of hops. The taste is a combination of malt with a warming alcoholic feel, lots of fruit, light clove and spice and a very pleasant hop bitter. While this beer is ready to be enjoyed immediately, it should develop well in the bottle over time.

Hazy orangey copper, but I had trouble evoking a head out of it, just a small layer of foam. Big fruity aroma: rummy raisin, plum, brown sugar coated banana and general tropicality. I think there could be a grassy hop there too. Flavor is dark and plummy, with a port like presence, though not nearly so sweet as one. Smooth and easy palate, with a mild alcoholic tingle and just the slightest rise of hoppy bitterness at the end. A touch under-carbonated.

Cloudy red-brown body under a thin smattering of tan bubbles on top. Intense sweet caramel and confectioner’s sugar in the aroma. Hugely sweet flavor, definitely a sipper. Cooked sugar-sweet flavor with some hop and yeast phenolic elements. Sweet and boring.

Clear rubyish amber. Slight light tan head. Slight fruity aroma. Lots of fruity malts with some cherry cough syrup and spice. Taste is full of fruity complex malts, slight sherry oxidation, and alcohol. Some brown sugared peaches and pineapple. Spices blended in give ita nice character. A little dry, and well filled with flavors. Pretty good stuff!

I forget whos ent me this, but I’m happy they did so. I took a few bottles of this out to GABF with me and got so drunk I barely remember drinking them. So I’m happy to get one to enjoy at home. The aroma is a touch buttery, but not in a diacetyl way....more like buttered yams with carmelized notes. Lots of malt, candied notes, toffee, caramel, dark fruits, sweet bread and brown sugar. The body is a cloudy orange/brown and holds a lazy off white head that never really gets formed. Sort of round and candied malty int he fore. Feels like a well sucked on liquor toffee candy. Slightly hot with alcohol, but not crazily so. There are stewwed sweet syrupy dark fruit notes int he finish and it also get s abit metallic/bitter. Some nice points to it, but not something that floored me.

Thanks go out to walt for the bottle. Pours a small tan head, fair retention with little lace. Murky amber colored brew, course i had to kick the yeast up at the pour. Nose of Lightly sweet malts, hints of bananna, anise and lightly spicey. Body is med/light, lightly oily on the palate. Lightly sweet malts, caramel, lightly musty with some hints of raisins, banannaand a faint grassiness. Finish is medium sweet and fruity. Nice brew! Thanks again walt!

Courtesy bu11zeye. Amber/amber-ruby, small off white head. Nose of zesty yeast, candi sugar, dark fruits, and rich malt. Flavor adds bready elements. Finish is dry and yeasty. Full/medium body, well carbonated. Decent.
