Commercial Description:
This will be our final release in the Divine Reserve series for this year. No. 3 is an imperial or double IPA meaning that it is higher in alcohol and hoppier than a regular IPA. The taste of this beer is initially malt with honey notes (from honey, no less) versus spicy hop bitterness with the hops eventually winning. In fact, you will notice that the bitter will remain with you well after each sip. This is a beer that should mellow with age. While this beer is recommended primarily for the hopheads of the world, the bitter of this beer is surprisingly pleasant for being so, well, huge. That may be attributed in a large part to our water quality. Ah, the things reverse osmosis lets you do. Here is some info on the beer: Cases Made: 542 Date Brewed: July 17, 2006 Date Bottled: September 21, 2006 Original Gravity: 1.082 Final Gravity: 1.010 Alcohol: 9.5% ABV Malts: Maris Otter, Wheat, Caravienne, Carapils and Dark Crystal Other Sugars: Honey, Molasses Hops: Chinook, Centennial, Ahtenum, Cascades For those of you that don't remember, this recipe was inspired by David Majoras' winning entry in the 2006 Big Batch Brew Bash competition. We use the term "inspired by" because when scaling up a recipe, many changes, some drastic, are always made. We hope you enjoy this beer! We also hope you are one of the lucky ones that finds some of this beer!

Bottle, thanks mj. Clear strong copper color with a white head. Floral, grassy, piney citrusy hop nose with plenty of biscuity caramel too. Has a bold caramel/toffee, maris otter malty base. Next comes notes of brown sugar, wood, grapefruit, pine and citrusy hops. The taste is nice but too sweet for my personal tastes - I find the overabundance of caramel/crystal malt detracts from the hop character. Full, round and creamy with subtle carbonation.

12oz bottle, thanks to fly. Rusty honey colored body. Sticky and heavy old fruity hops, heavy malt presence and some moderate oxidation noticed in the nose, but otherwise it’s a fairly clean and crisp aroma. Coarse on the tongue, with biting caramel malts, some age noticed up front as well. Sweet and warming honey, caramel and sweet whiskey flavors. I get more of a boozy Irish whiskey flavor at a warmer temperature. A bit of a strange double IPA, a little too malty and coarse for me, but otherwise I like it.

12oz bottle, courtesy of mj. Thanks, Mike! Pours a hazy, honey-orange color; minimal off-white head. Diminished piney hops and earthy candy sugar malt character in the aroma. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: tastes like an aged IIPA or Barleywine with the hops fallen off; viscous, honey and brown sugar; mildly astringent presence in the mouth; orange, grapefruit hops still lingering. Lengthy, earthy and sugary finish.

lots of sweet orange and tangerine in the aroma along with the spicyness, lots of earthy bitterness combined with the spicy hop flavor, nice sweetness almost adds balance but falls short

(12oz bottle, thanks mj) Minimal off-white head with clear amber body. Aroma is moderately sweet, pineapple/grapefruit, peach, some caramel. Taste is medium sweet, grapefruit, pine, some peach. Fairly dry finish. Medium-full body, somewhat acidic.

A thick sunshine orange pour. Primary aroma of oceanic scotch malts, cedar and brown sugar. Powdered sugar and pastry provide a little soft touch, finishing on a strange linty hint of clean diapers. Very woody and alcoholic with quite a lot of soapy astringency. Mild grains in honey, peat. Generic whiskey qualities in the mouth. Simple, slick, and boring. Absolutely nothing notable or enjoyable here. Thanks for sharing, Mike!

12oz. bottle. Aroma is fruity and lightly musty, with suggestions of blueberry, bubblegum, tangerine and a faint grapefruit character. Hazy light-medium amber color with swirls of sediment and a slight head. Flavor is malty and sweet, surprisingly so in fact, honeyish and sugary with an influx of gently citric and bitter hops. Gives a leafy, lightly spicy impression moving toward the midpoint, some juicy orange noted, finish is fairly well balanced, showing a blend of the sweet malts and hop flavors along with a touch of alcohol heat. Smooth on the palate with a low level of effervescence and a medium-full body. Good but would likely have been better a little closer to the bottling date (July 2006). Thanks to theisti for the sample.

12 oz bottle from Zinister, brewed July 17, 2006. Enjoyed at the csbosox tasting 7/3. Pour is cloudy orange-amber with just a trail of a white head. Aroma is muted hops and some malt. Taste is grapefruit peel, and a little bit of aged sourness. The alcohol is completely buried in this, but there was something just a touch off in this one. Thanks for this one Michael.
