Commercial Description:
This Divine Reserve was inspired by the winning entry of the 2007 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition, brewed by Mike Heniff, a highly decorated local Houston homebrewer. Russian Imperial Stouts are very big and very black and this one is no exception. DR5 has a rich malty body full of coffee and chocolate flavors and a spiciness derived from the combination hops and high alcohol. It was brewed with a variety of malts including 2 row pale, crystal, chocolate and roasted barley. It was hopped with Nugget, Willamette and Centennial. We used an American ale yeast to ferment it. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer with some dark chocolate or a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

12 oz bottle. I had this back in September and it was a bit harsh so I held a few until now to try again. Now it comes off quite more refined and pleasurable. It pours inky black with a thin light-brown head which dissipated except for around the edge. Still created some nice lacing. Smell was a wonderful roasty malt with coffee and chocolate intermixed. Taste was burnt coffee with some chocolate. Mouthfeel was thick with some dryness and a slight bitter finish. Much nicer than when fresh. Quite a great Impy Stout at this point.

Bottle courtesy of bu11zeye. Pours a jet black color with a ring of brown lace on top. Good aroma of black chocolate, roasted malt, some sweetness and a mild aspirin presence. Very good flavor of coacoa, roasted malt, some sweetness in the middle and bitterness in the end. The body is light with a powdery texture and gentle carbonation. Very good.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of Zinister. Pour is almost entirely black, save for some ruby highlights and a pretty deep tan head in my snifter. The head became rocky, and left some nice lacing. Visible tiny carbonation bubbles form at the bottom of the head at the edge of the glass. Aroma semi-sweet chocolate, roast and bitter pine hoppiness. Taste is very creamy; mostly the soft chocolate and roast. There is also a fair amount of carbonation. The pine hoppiness reappears in a fairly bitter finish. The after taste is quite oily, and features some soy and residual alcohol burn. Nice beer, thanks for sending this one my way Mike!

Pours black as night with a dark amber head. Thick and fullfilling in the mouth. Aroma of chocolate and some coffee. Taste is nutty with a chocolate coffee flavor to it. Slight end bitterness

Pours an oily black colour with a late-forming, medium brown head that fades to a sudsy cap. There is visible effervescence on the sides of the glass. The nose is heavily roasted malts with cocoa, nougat, some smoke. The flavour is deliciously roasty with a massive chocolate presence that lingers in the finish with notes of coffee and roasted barley. There is a lactic and citric tang that accompanies the full chocolate flavour of the beer. The backbone of the beer, in both the nose and flavour, is an airy, bready presence from start to finish. The fruit presence is minimal, but still there. The carbonation is gentle, yet tingly and perfectly matched for the vicosity and slick texture. The finish is very dry and roasty, with good residual sweetness incorporated.

In short: A floury/powdery Impy Stout. Below average.
How: Back from Europe tasting session with Montreal crew
The look: Almost black body with a tan ring of foam
In long: Nose is obviously roasted but also had this weird chemical component reminding me of Aspirins. Taste and mouthfeel is a bit on the floury side. Some maple, powdery cacao, Alcohol is apparent. Saint Arnold Mundane Reserve #5.

12oz bottle, 1 each from Immy and ucusty - thanks, lads! Very enjoyable, and a pleasingly different American impy stout. The pour is very dark and sludgy, with not a whole lot of head and carbonation (though no skimping either). Massive amounts of chocolate in the nose, with a slightly understated molasses presence - not sharp and aggressive like Abyss, but just there to give the choc malts a subtle, rounded quality, a tangy or musky gloss. Thick palate is nice, and there’s some roasted flavors in there. But this is very much like a creamy float of some sort, and highly enjoyable. Glad to have another bottle.

(Rating #1606)
