Commercial Description:
This Divine Reserve was inspired by the winning entry of the 2007 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition, brewed by Mike Heniff, a highly decorated local Houston homebrewer. Russian Imperial Stouts are very big and very black and this one is no exception. DR5 has a rich malty body full of coffee and chocolate flavors and a spiciness derived from the combination hops and high alcohol. It was brewed with a variety of malts including 2 row pale, crystal, chocolate and roasted barley. It was hopped with Nugget, Willamette and Centennial. We used an American ale yeast to ferment it. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer with some dark chocolate or a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

Bottled. Poured a beautiful inky black with a long-standing cap of deep golden-brown head. The aroma picked up toasted grains paired with cocoa and darker chocolates.. a mild herbal and oaky impression rounded it out.. darker overall and seductive. The flavor picked up well-roasted coffee to pair with sweeter chocolates.. molasses serves to thicken it out as it approaches the edges of the palate.. decadent chocolate and dark fruit join oak and light coffee bitterness at the finish.. well-balanced with lower bitterness. Heavier-bodied and creamy on the palate with an excellent flow to it.. alcohol was superbly hidden. This was a gem that I would love to see again!

Great nose you get chocolate and coffee mixed with dark roasted malts, Pours a deep dark thick black, the thin fuzzy brown head doesn’t last long. The lacing is thin and oily. The taste is what you would expect from the nose; dark chocolate mixed is roasted malts and a hint of tawny coffee. A very thick and creamy almost smooth and round mouth feel. After this smooth beer goes down you get a coffee and chocolate taste that stays with you

My Bottom Line:
Coffee and chocolate malt flavors thrive in a sumptuous body where citrusy, wooden hoppiness caresses the back end. This mature Imperial Stout is genuinely satisfying.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A thin ring of foam surrounds the brown-sleeved black.
-Carbonation is relatively quiet and let’s the malts express themselves clearly.
-This is not one of those Imperial Stouts which get tedious soon after the first sips.
-Malts develop a molasses-like personality as well.
-Alcohol is well-hidden underneath all those cereal flavors.

Bottle.

From bottle..Thanks to Beerlando : This stuff smell wonderful. Pours a deep dark thick black color, with a thin brown head, that doesnt have a very long shelf life. It does leave a brown ring around the glass, and a dirty film like lacing. Dark malts and chocolate and coffee beans dominate the nose, and it is a great nose at that. The taste is right in line with the great smell. Dark roasted malts and chocolate. A think creamy feel in the mouth. Goes down very smooth. Aftertaste is roasted and coffee flavored. Awesome stout. Thanks a bunch for this one Beerlando!

Objectively speaking: Soft imperial stout whose sweetness is better integrated than most.
I like: Pitch black. Fruity enough rather than plain chocolate/coffee. The alcohol feels soft and rounded, a trait I rarely appreciate. Maple pudding notes!
I dislike: Quite powdery nose and requiring a fair bit of time before opening up. Timid at first, but growingly better. A bit too heavy on the carbonation.

Pours an oily deep black with a medium brown head. Aroma is moderately sweet, coffee, molasses, roast, some chocolate and cherry. Flavor is moderately sweet, chocolate, coffee and some earthy hops. Slight alcohol warming. Creamy texture, medium-full body.

Wow. Black pour with a decent brown head. Aroma is a bit thin due to temperature, I’m afraid, but some nice dark fruit and chocolate comes through. Flavor is rich and chocolaty ... like an alcoholic Hershey’s Special Dark in liquid form. Semi-sweet dark chocolate flavor wit ha velvety mouthfeel. Wonderful brew.

bottle from rollinhard... opaque black color with a dark brown head. it’s thin and fades rather quickly to a ring. cooked chocolate brownie aroma with notes of molasses cooked prunes, grassy hops, light ash and a spicy alcohol burn. the palate is on the sweet side with some acidity from the high level of carbonation. chocolate, some near burnt flavors and alcohol are noted. it finishes dry and leaves some coffee behind. the flavor starts nice and sweet, roasty and chocolatey but never builds up or follows through. medium bodied leaning on full but acidic carbonation keeps it from reaching there...
