Commercial Description:
This Divine Reserve was inspired by the winning entry of the 2007 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition, brewed by Mike Heniff, a highly decorated local Houston homebrewer. Russian Imperial Stouts are very big and very black and this one is no exception. DR5 has a rich malty body full of coffee and chocolate flavors and a spiciness derived from the combination hops and high alcohol. It was brewed with a variety of malts including 2 row pale, crystal, chocolate and roasted barley. It was hopped with Nugget, Willamette and Centennial. We used an American ale yeast to ferment it. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer with some dark chocolate or a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

12 oz. bottle, crema like head that hides a beer that is more an espresso , a fine bitter coffee with a hoppy finish, this was excellent

Bottle, thanks to TexasJeep. Shared with NachlamSie. Pours super dark black with small but persistent brown head. A swirl leaves some attractive falling legs. The aroma is of prunes with some espresso notes, a touch of vanilla, even a little bit of oak. Just once in a while I get a slight vegetal whiff, but not enough to turn me off. The flavor starts with chocolate and a smoothing vanilla note. Then a little bit of spicy hoppiness kicks in, balancing the sweetness nicely. The malts get more toward the raisin and espresso flavors toward the finish, which is pleasantly bittersweet with only the slightest hint of alcohol. This is a pretty good beer. Not as extreme as many other imperial stouts, but it strikes a good balance.

Bottle, big thanks to Tronraner for sharing this one. The pour is black. We’re talking seriously black. Lacing is dense on the goblet and a spotty dark tan head floats on top. The aroma is very strong, I was able to get some good scents just by popping off the cap. Heavy prunes, molasses, vanilla wafers, and Latin American coffee make up the nose. Mouthfeel is rich and dense. Flavor is more of the same. A lot of dark, dried fruit notes, molasses, vanilla, chocolate. The finish actually lets some hops shine through. The interesting thing about this impy is that it’s very bold but isn’t heavily roasty or heavily sweet. It sits right in the middle, nicely balanced, but somehow aggressive in its own right. Pretty solid stuff.

Bottle. Pours a deep cola-amber to black that expresses carbonation the way a cola would. Nose has a deep ethanol element with caramel and chocolate underneath, primarily chocolate. Taste is much of what’s in the nose, with a smooth palate.

Bottle courtesy of Bu11zeye: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice big foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consisted of loads of black chocolate notes with some light sweet notes Taste was also a nice balance mix between some black chocolate, some sweetness and light roasted bitter malt at the end. I also noticed some light notes of raisins. Body is full with some vinous characteristics and some good carbonation. I have to admit to really enjoying that one.

Thanks for sharing, iowaherkeye. A medium sized light brown head tops the black body. The aroma is sweet milk chocolate with some bread dough and plums. The taste has milk chocolate with some raspberries in the finish. There is also a little bit of tobacco and this complements the nice roasted finish. Solid.
