Commercial Description:
This Divine Reserve was inspired by the winning entry of the 2007 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition, brewed by Mike Heniff, a highly decorated local Houston homebrewer. Russian Imperial Stouts are very big and very black and this one is no exception. DR5 has a rich malty body full of coffee and chocolate flavors and a spiciness derived from the combination hops and high alcohol. It was brewed with a variety of malts including 2 row pale, crystal, chocolate and roasted barley. It was hopped with Nugget, Willamette and Centennial. We used an American ale yeast to ferment it. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer with some dark chocolate or a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

Pours an opaque black with brown hue, almost jammy. Nice chocolate milk head. Smells of chocolate, cherries, molasses and caramel. Tastes as it smells. Chocolate covered cherries, sweet and syrupy. A little hot. Full in the mouth. Definitly a sipper and I can tell a little age will push this already tasty brew into the upper echelon.

12 oz bottle thanks to lb4lb. Very dark pour with a head that I would have sworn had tints of purple in it. Aromas were all dark fruit, chocolate, anise. Flavors was coffee, mocha, bitter dark chocolate finish, with some alcohol warming. Pretty darn tasty.

Courtesy of Zinister! Pours a murky dark brown colour with a small chocolate brown head. Nose of coffee, roasted malts, chocolate and alcohol. Initial taste of smooth creamy chocolate moving into roasted malts that light up the mouth. Finshing with dark chocolate, coffee and lighly hopped. Well balanced. Medium to full body. Good head retention and some lacing of the glass. Chalky dry finish. Alcohol is well masked. Awesome!

NorCal tasting Dec 07 - Oddly enough, this beer started the evening off. Sure, we usually go light to dark but there didn’t really seem to be many dark ones around so we just went for it. I really enjoyed my first experience with Saint Arnold (I had the #4), so I was hoping that this too wouldn’t disappoint. It didn’t. A very nice stout, that didn’t quite strike me as an imperial stout. It was missing that bold assertiveness that great impy stouts have, when they sort of impose their will on your tastebuds. This beer sort of mingled amicably, being neither forceful or agressive. The beer’s appearance was a nearly black in color with brown edges, and a thick foamy tan head. Aroma was chocolate covered cherries, chalk powder, and lightly smokey. Flavor is a bit ashy, but thankfully not so much where I hated it. Chocolate, meat marinade, alcohol, molasses, and a touch of smoke tie this beer up. I think with a bit more time in the bottle this beer would get a few points higher and even now it’s a nice beer. 2 for 2 from the Texas boys.

12 oz bottle thanks to lb4lb in a trade. Poured with very little head and appeared oily with a amber red hue on the glass. Nice smells of coffee and chocolate with flavors of the same with mollasses coming through in the end. Nice!

bottle from lumpy. oh my this is beautiful. i just walked a mile home in the snow (&yes lumpy, it was up hill too) after missing my bus. it’s cold as fuck out there. but i’m home now i have my chair by the radiator, wioping the blood off my feet, and loading a dvd into the machine as i crack this beautiful looking beer that i held to the light and nothing got through, a tall thick lasting dark brown head. this has a great dark roast coffee , alcohol & fudge aroma. strong bitter chocolate flavor with a burnt marshmallow finish. the burnt flavor gets a bit strong for my tastes. coffee finishes well however. there is a touch of mint mixed into the alcohol dryness. i enjoyed the cocoa a bit over bitter for my tastes, but not a bad impy at all. only 2 more days until i can buy new shoes, hells yeah, i think i’ll have a can of ten fidy next. between those two i should stop feeling pain. 5 8 7 3 16

Pours like used motor oil: thick, black, and oily with a bit of dark brown froth on the top. Smells of chocolate, coffee, and a bit of alcohol as it warms. The taste starts as roasted coffee and chocolate, and gives way to a molasses aftertaste with a hint of alcohol. Huge beer, absolutely excellent. Its a shame its such low production.
