Commercial Description:
This Divine Reserve was inspired by the winning entry of the 2007 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition, brewed by Mike Heniff, a highly decorated local Houston homebrewer. Russian Imperial Stouts are very big and very black and this one is no exception. DR5 has a rich malty body full of coffee and chocolate flavors and a spiciness derived from the combination hops and high alcohol. It was brewed with a variety of malts including 2 row pale, crystal, chocolate and roasted barley. It was hopped with Nugget, Willamette and Centennial. We used an American ale yeast to ferment it. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer with some dark chocolate or a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

From the Bottle at Dr Bill’s Tasting Falling Rock Tap House, Denver 10/10/2008 Bourbon aroma. Beige head. Black smooth on the palate and strong in alcohol with a little dryness in a bitter and warming malt finish.

Pours a very dark liquid with a very thin layer of mocha head/crown. Smells fantastic, toffee, caramel, roasted malt, chocolate, cream, maybe a little vanilla. Taste at first was solid, but unremarkable, but this leaves such a great chocolate and creamy aftertaste. Milky up front. Extremely good. Mouth is medium to heavy in body, low to med in carbonation. I hope to get another chance to try this great brew.

Bottle. Pours a black body with a tan head. Sweet malty but a hint grainy and slick, some lighter salty chocolate and grainy dried fruits. Not one of the better stouts out there.

I can’t remember the way in which this got to my cellar but I am glad to have a second bottle. While it is starting to go downhill I think it still has a few more months of life left in it. A solid all-around imperial stout this one is an example of how a regional brewery can do big beers right.

Aroma / Appearance - The fuzzy tan head and fluid black body intermingle with sheets of tinted lacing. Flourless chocolate torte dominates the headspace but there is also a hint of raspberry infused black coffee. Including the oatmeal cookies the overall experience is not unlike that of a fully stocked dessert tray.

Flavor / Palate - A little thin bodied it nonetheless packs quite a flavor punch. Cold black coffee, vanilla, chocolate, and some malt swirl around the senses. Perhaps a bit heavy on cocoa it could be a bit more balanced. Regardless it has enough complexity to deserve spending some time reflecting on its strengths. This is an ideal after dinner treat.

12oz bottle from both Bleeng and Deniz....pours close to black with a moderate yet quickly dissipating tan head.....aroma of grapes, alcohol, soy, and chocolate....flavors improved with an emphasis on clean chocolate, roasted malt. perhaps some added dark fruit and a roastysour bitterness in the finish. alcohol a little more prevalent in the nose. not as full-bodied as i was expecting.

Black with a lasting tan head. Aroma is roasted, with chocolate and a touch of smoked ham. Intense and sweet roasted flavour with chocolate and a hint of smoke. Loads of alcohol, gets a little cloying after a while.

Black with a brown head. Big ass roasty malt, sweet brown sugar and chocolate aromas. Smooth medium body. Very good earthy molasses and black malt flavors with lightly sweet dark chocolate. Great beer.

12 Fl. Bottle. Thanks to Bu11zeye. Pours dark amber with a creamy head and lacings. Tart, vanilla, piney hops, roast and port. Smooth and full palate. Coffee, vanilla and milky chocolate. Warmth from alcohol. Very nice and tasty!
