Commercial Description:
This Divine Reserve was inspired by the winning entry of the 2007 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition, brewed by Mike Heniff, a highly decorated local Houston homebrewer. Russian Imperial Stouts are very big and very black and this one is no exception. DR5 has a rich malty body full of coffee and chocolate flavors and a spiciness derived from the combination hops and high alcohol. It was brewed with a variety of malts including 2 row pale, crystal, chocolate and roasted barley. It was hopped with Nugget, Willamette and Centennial. We used an American ale yeast to ferment it. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer with some dark chocolate or a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a huge, dark brown head covering a black body. Aroma of soy, chocolate, alcohol, and cinnamon. Taste is coffee, alcohol, chocolate, smoke, spices, and overall, pretty rich. Syrupy mouthfeel, light carbonation.

Bottle shared by doulos31/goodgrief. Pour was typical for the style, dark brown-black but with only a normal/weak looking head. The aroma was vinous, coffee, chocolate. The flavor followed the aroma while it finished with some roasted ashy notes, though. Slightly bitter finish, probably more from the roast than any substanial hopping. Mouthfeel was slightly acidic, a little on the light side for the style. A decent but not wonderful brew. Thanks for sharing, Tom!

Beer pours dark, smallish head and little lacing. The chalkiness of the first sip is striking. I like the chalky thing in my stouts. The flavor is lots of roast, cocoa, maybe a hint of dark fruit and a touch of ash in the finish. Sweet, but certainly under control and not difficult to drink at all. Decently complex and above average in enjoyment. It didn’t wow me, but left me without any concrete complaints.

Bottle courtesy of degarth. Dark brown, near black pour with a large, creamy brown head. Thick bits of lacing. Smells of roasted malts and chocolate. Very rich. Maybe a hint of smoke. Tastes smooth with lots of cocoa and roast. Creamy and sweet. Toasty malt and bittersweet chocolate swirl together. Solid.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of hopdog and SS. Pours black with a small tan head. The aroma has a moderately sweet fruitines powered by prunes or perhaps figs. There are also notes of roasted amlt, chocolate, and a hint of coffee. The flavor still has some dark fruit to it, but is more influenced by the roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. Full bodied with lighter carbonation. This is a very solid offering.

Pours pitch black with small brown head. Smell is charred malt, dark chocolate, espresso and ash. Flavor is much of the same with more coming from the espresso and chocolate. Still a little fizzy for the style but a nice full body. One of my favorite Texas beers but I preferred this one fresher.
