Commercial Description:
This Divine Reserve was inspired by the winning entry of the 2007 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition, brewed by Mike Heniff, a highly decorated local Houston homebrewer. Russian Imperial Stouts are very big and very black and this one is no exception. DR5 has a rich malty body full of coffee and chocolate flavors and a spiciness derived from the combination hops and high alcohol. It was brewed with a variety of malts including 2 row pale, crystal, chocolate and roasted barley. It was hopped with Nugget, Willamette and Centennial. We used an American ale yeast to ferment it. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer with some dark chocolate or a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

Bottle. [<a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=4 target=_new> Courtesy of ygtbsm94]. Clear dark dark black color with a large, frothy - creamy, excellent lacing, fully lasting, light brown head. Aroma is moderate to light heavy malty, roasted, burnt, chocolate. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and bitter with a long to average duration. Body is medium full, texture is oliy - light creamy, carbonation is soft. (110408)

12 oz bottle, via trade, can’t remember who sent this. Pours a very dark black body under a nice foamy chocolate brown head with some decent retention. The nose is really dominated by the heavily roasty malt with lighter accents of licorice and smoke. The flavor is just intense roasty burnt malt with a good deal of astringency and chalkiness. This is really a one trick pony type of guy. A good bit of alcohol flavor on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a oily viscous texture. Lots of alcohol heat on the finish. The carbonation is just a bit too active for me as well. Overall, this is certainly on the bottom tier of Imperial Stouts.

Bottle, courtesy illidurit. Pours pitch black, with very little head, and thin lacing. Caramel aromas, with licorice, cotton candy, chocolate, and some peanut butter. Flavor again has that Reece’s thing going for it with chocolate and peanut butter, caramel, licorice....has a decent hoppy finish. Medium-bodied and fairly easy to drink, balanced decently.

bottle thanks to badbeer, thanks mike! Poured black, fluffy tan head. Aroma was chocolate and caramel. Flavor had more chocolate, caramel, and bit of coffee, and some bisctui. Finished creamy, very mellow with no hint of the abv. Thanks mike for sharing this great beer!

12oz bottle. Aroma: Chocolate, light coffee, smoke and alcohol. A weird tomato-y vegetal note comes forward as it warms. Appearance: Black in color with no highlights. Dark tan head was full and creamy with good retention. Nice lacing. Flavor: Roasted malt with a nice smokey note, coffee, chocolate, toasted nuts. Some nice hop flavors and a touch of peppery spice into the finish. Alcohol is noticeable and pleasant. Medium sweet finish and medium bitterness. Palate: Full bodied and creamy. Moderate carbonation. Pleasant alcohol warmth in back of mouth. Overall: A nice Imperial Stout. The weird vegetal smell is my only major complaint. Besides that, it’s a nice drinker with some good flavor.

12 oz bottle from zinister. Pours an opaque black color with a big tan head that should have lasted a bit longer. Very inviting aroma of molasses, dark chocolate and roasted/burnt malts. The flavor is rich with lightly sweetened coffee, biter dark chocolate and ripe plums. The mouthfeel was full and malty without being heavy. The finish was long and dry with a bit of lingering biter chocolate. Overall: A first rate stout. Highly recommended. Thanks Zin.

12 oz bottle. I had this back in September and it was a bit harsh so I held a few until now to try again. Now it comes off quite more refined and pleasurable. It pours inky black with a thin light-brown head which dissipated except for around the edge. Still created some nice lacing. Smell was a wonderful roasty malt with coffee and chocolate intermixed. Taste was burnt coffee with some chocolate. Mouthfeel was thick with some dryness and a slight bitter finish. Much nicer than when fresh. Quite a great Impy Stout at this point.
