RagallachMC (631), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Apr 29, 2008 12oz bottle. Aroma: Chocolate, light coffee, smoke and alcohol. A weird tomato-y vegetal note comes forward as it warms. Appearance: Black in color with no highlights. Dark tan head was full and creamy with good retention. Nice lacing. Flavor: Roasted malt with a nice smokey note, coffee, chocolate, toasted nuts. Some nice hop flavors and a touch of peppery spice into the finish. Alcohol is noticeable and pleasant. Medium sweet finish and medium bitterness. Palate: Full bodied and creamy. Moderate carbonation. Pleasant alcohol warmth in back of mouth. Overall: A nice Imperial Stout. The weird vegetal smell is my only major complaint. Besides that, it’s a nice drinker with some good flavor.
lithy (219), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 12, 2008 Suttree’s 2008 Pre-Brewer’s Jam Tasting. Sample from a bottle thanks to Suttree. Pitch black pour with a thick brown head that coats the glass and leaves a nice ring at the edges. Viscous with a sweet chocolate and roasted nut aroma. Body is chocolate and sweet light coffee with a vinuous red wine or cherry bite. Suttree (2355), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 12, 2008 Brown, Brown head. Some odd nutty aromas, mixed with more traditional smells like coffee and chocolate Flavor is smililar, with a lot of chocolate up front and a winey finish. Thanks to KAggie or this trade! WeeHeavySD (1867), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Sep 25, 2008 12oz i’m guessing that came from lb4lb. Shared with my gf Cyn. Pours black with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is sweet and rich with lots of chocolate and coffee notes. Taste is sweet and chocolately but not any where near as rich as the nose portends. Overall nice mouth feel after a while. Nice beer overall. BMan1113VR (925), Los Angeles (and Dallas, TX), California, USA Sep 24, 2008 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a huge, dark brown head covering a black body. Aroma of soy, chocolate, alcohol, and cinnamon. Taste is coffee, alcohol, chocolate, smoke, spices, and overall, pretty rich. Syrupy mouthfeel, light carbonation. eaglefan538 (2079), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Sep 20, 2008 Bottle shared by doulos31/goodgrief. Pour was typical for the style, dark brown-black but with only a normal/weak looking head. The aroma was vinous, coffee, chocolate. The flavor followed the aroma while it finished with some roasted ashy notes, though. Slightly bitter finish, probably more from the roast than any substanial hopping. Mouthfeel was slightly acidic, a little on the light side for the style. A decent but not wonderful brew. Thanks for sharing, Tom!
