Commercial Description:
This Divine Reserve was inspired by the winning entry of the 2007 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition, brewed by Mike Heniff, a highly decorated local Houston homebrewer. Russian Imperial Stouts are very big and very black and this one is no exception. DR5 has a rich malty body full of coffee and chocolate flavors and a spiciness derived from the combination hops and high alcohol. It was brewed with a variety of malts including 2 row pale, crystal, chocolate and roasted barley. It was hopped with Nugget, Willamette and Centennial. We used an American ale yeast to ferment it. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer with some dark chocolate or a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

Objectively speaking: Soft imperial stout whose sweetness is better integrated than most.
I like: Pitch black. Fruity enough rather than plain chocolate/coffee. The alcohol feels soft and rounded, a trait I rarely appreciate. Maple pudding notes!
I dislike: Quite powdery nose and requiring a fair bit of time before opening up. Timid at first, but growingly better. A bit too heavy on the carbonation.

Big thanks to Zinister for the beer. The bottle looks simple, but good. The beer in the glass is deep-black, not much foam. Very complex aroma, like wooh, hoppy and a bit chemically. Tastes woody and earthy, not very sweet, finish is malty and dry. Well balanced but also a bit boring. Had better Imperial Stouts!

Sampled at Bockyhorsey’s Bocky Bash on 7-5-08. Deep black pour with a small creamy brown head. Sweet aromas of roasted nuts and malt, brown sugar and coffee. Flavor is big on coffee and chocolate, with some spice and hops at the end. A bit lighter flavor than many IS’s, but still thick on the palate. Pretty good.

Pours out black with a dark tan head with excellent retention and lacing. Roasty, milk chocolate, coffee, and hints of cherry and smoke. Slightly hoppy and paired with bitter chocolate greet the tongue to begin, leading into a lingering roastiness with a slight alcohol burn. Higher than medium carbonation and medium bodied. Good brew from the folks at St. Arnold. I look forward to seeing how this one ages. Bottle courtesy of PHawk; thanks for the opportunity!

Bottle sampled at the 7/5/08 Bocky Bash locals tasting courtesy of Bockyhorsey. Pours a pitch black with minimal tan head. Nose is molasses, salty nuts and coffee. Taste is coffee, cocoa, coffee and a touch of soy sauce. Creamy mouth feel – decent IS.

HELL YES! Bottle poured into a nice tulip glass. Black pour with a very small brown head. I smell chocolate and boy do I taste it. The finish is pure bittersweet chocolate. Slight bitter bit at the end from the hops. I could drink this all night...well almost anyway.
