The beer pours out a cloudy color of melted caramel candies, with an off-white fluffy head with a bunch of large bubbles. The head created was nice and thick and stayed the entire time I drank this beauty. The aroma was major hoppage. Fantastic citrusy aroma, tons of resin, alcohol, sweet malts, bready and a bit of the vine...reminded me of the smell of a brewhouse. Flavor was just a flat out assault of hops. Tons of juicy bitter hops, slightly oxidized, sweet malts, caramels, with a slightly hot finish. Harsh on the tongue and loved every minute of it. Thick and chewy up front with a smooth, last finish. Damned near perfect. emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Oct 3, 2008 Pours a bright non translucent orange red with a thin creamy yellow orange head. The nose is very pungent, hoppy, citrusy, fruity, sweet, malty, a little alcohol, mild earthy maltiness. Lovely hop nose. The flavor is fruity and hoppy, nice assertive hop profile that lacks the bitterness it could have had. Malty, very clean upfront citrus flavor, lemon peel. Light alcohol shows some warmth in the mouthfeel and the hops lend a grapefruit peel bitterness. A lovely barley wine. Haslinger (657), Syracuse, New York, USA

A very good hoppy aroma. The taste is a bit malty with some good pine hop taste. The aftertaste is bitter but lingers nicely in the mouth. Great brew Ughsmash (4054), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 30, 2008 Bottled. Poured hazy, deeper peach with a short, sticky, well-retained cap of beige head. The aroma was deep with rich caramelization and darker fruity notes.. hops were also heavy with pine and juicy grapefruit starring.. almost candy-like fruity sweetness rides out the back of the nose. The flavor opened with a touch of prickly carbonation and pine bitterness amplified by the booze presence.. the middle found sweet, aged caramel, toffee, and brown sugar sweetness with a huge dose of resiny pine and grapefruit bitterness around.. the pine stuck around on the finish, leaving a satisfying impression. Thicker on the palate with little carbonation evident after the initial hit.. juicy with increasing warmth from front to back.. alcohol was well masked, but the bitterness was rough at times. Overall an excellent brew! wetherel (1641), Encinitas, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 30, 2008 Bonus bottle from kp. Big hoppy aroma. A hint of oxidation. A hint of buttery caramelized meloidins. Borderline DIPA because of the high hop bitterness. Amber color, thick body. Leans sweet underneath the hop bitterness. Pretty nice, but I don’t expect it to age with the oxidation already starting to show. vyvvy (2068), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 28, 2008 Pours hazy bronze with a tan head. The aroma has musty oxidized notes, toffee, bread and thick musty fruit. Thick chewy body with semi-sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with thick fruits, oxidized flavors, lots of thick malt and spicy hops. The finish is very sweet and cloying. WeeHeavySD (3016), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 26, 2008 12oz via trade. Pours orange witha 1 finger tan head. Nose is sweet and hints and dark fruit. Taste is sweet and rich with a hoppy bitter edge. This is an interesting hoppy barleywine, that has some heat on the back end. juiceisloose (671), Windermere, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 25, 2008 Pours a dark caramel color with a dark orange glow to it. A big and foamy off white head sits on top and shows good retention and thin settles to a small film. The aroma is a full of grapefruit and piney hops balanced out by caramel malts and dark fruits. The flavor shows a good amount of sweet caramel, dark fruits and toffee, but are quickly overcome by the grapefruit and piney hops. There is a good amount of bitterness throughout the flavor. Medium full bodied with good carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel with a long, bitter finish. Some earthy spices linger on the backend as well. This one seems pretty young at this point with all the bitterness, but I could see it becoming really good with some age on it. I hope I get to revisit this one.
