Commercial Description:
This is a big, malty, hoppy barleywine. Yet with all of the intense flavors, they meld together to create a well-balanced big beer. The nose has a strong resiny hop note. The taste starts with a combination of the malty sweetness and spicy hops with both flavors magnified by the high alcohol level. The spiciness carries through the middle and finishes with a satisfyingly dry bitter. It was brewed with 2 row pale, Caramunich and Special B malts with brown sugar added in the kettle and hopped with 225 lbs of Columbus hops including 44 lbs that were dry hopped. We used our Saint Arnold yeast strain which gives a rich, creamy mouthfeel to the brew. It is unfiltered and will clarify with aging. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer. This beer will age well. Original Gravity: 1.094 Final Gravity: 1.019

2009-06-14. Dark ruby tinged brown body with a modest creamy beige head. (4+) Aroma is mild, light alcohol up front precedes pleasant malts, what I believe to be the Special B in particular comes out in the aroma. (7+) Flavour is similarly quite malty, light sugars and caramel but dry malt notes and pleasant light bitterness balance it nicely and prevent it from becoming too sweet. Alcohol is fairly restrained, but fairly warming. Slow warm build up leaves the mouth pleasantly tingly. Smooth average plus bodied palate. Rather nice. Bottle from trade with mj

Thanks to ericandersnavy for this one. He said it’s ready to drink. So I’m drinkin! Pours a hazy reddish amber with a decent beige head. Lots of caramel in the aroma. Hop aroma seems mixed. Not floral though. Full bodied. Mild carbonation. Flavor is definitely malt, and the hop presence seems more citrus than pine, but that may just be me. But it seems rather blended together. There is so much to taste. Lots of citrus, though not really grapefruit. It is certainly "rich, creamy". Incredibly yummy. Spicey hop notes seem to stand forward in the finish. Who knew Texas did this stuff. It’s WOW.

Bottle, thanks Josh.Poured a ruby red/brown, with no head. Nose was a bit hoppy with strong malts, and hint of alcohol. I liked this, but found it a bit jumbled with some flavors that could be slightly more refined. Very smooth, with some nice spice notes.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Hazy amber color; small creamy head. Nice aroma, caramel and American hops, ending a bit buttery and dusty (interesting), maybe sweaty too. It has a very good body structure, strong caramel flavor, good sweetness level, very good and powerful hopping (a lot of bitter oranges). Very good Strong Ale, dynamic and powerful.

#31 Bottle. [Papso Shady blind Tasting 2009] Small fizzy beige head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Light cloudy amber color. Aroma of toasted malt, light fruity, nutty, wood. Over the palate came heavy grapefruit, pine like, bitter flower. Also some caramel and again fruity notes. Full bodied with an average carbonation and dry texture. Moderated bitter and sweet flavor. Lingering dry and bitter flavor. 8 / 3 / 8 / 4 / 16 = 3.9
