Commercial Description:
This is a bold, malty, smoky Scotch Ale. It pours a deep amber brown. It was quite cloudy at the time of bottling but will clarify as it ages. The nose is full of smoky toffee notes. The taste opens with sweet malt and spice, then the alcohol comes up with a light residual sweetness on the finish. A balanced smoky flavor is in this beer from start to finish, although it never is the dominant character. It was brewed with 2-Row, Biscuit, Dark Crystal, Amber, Peated, Caramunich and Wheat malt. It is hopped early with Hallertau Tradition and late with Hallertau Hersbrucker. We fermented DR8 with a traditional Scotch Ale yeast. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer. This beer was inspired by Phillip Kaufman’s winning entry in the 2009 Big Batch Brew Bash.

Thanks to rustychiles for this beer. It pours murky brown and has a short-lived yellow-white head. Sweet up front, it finishes with a touch of stickiness.

( 12oz bottle thanks to ericandersnavy) I’ll start off by saying these beers have been wildly inconsistent, but the first one I rated was fantastic. This is representative of that one. Pours cloudy orange with a nice head and great lacing. Nose of peat, smoke, grass, plastic and quite complex. Taste of sweet caramel, smoke, peat, with a creamy sweet linger. Not too much of any flavor.

12 oz bottle that pours a cloudy reddish brown. Mild carbonation that rapidly dissipates. Smokey and peat aroma that follows through on the taste with a bit of sweetness and a medium body.

[Bottle] Pours a hazy ruby/brown with a creamy but quickly dissipating khaki head. Aroma is really smoky - a mixture of peat and the greasy stuff that drips off of ribs and gets burnt by the charcoal. A touch of dark fruits and caramel come through as it begins to warm. Flavor is very similar to the nose, except there is much more sweetness evident. The mouthfeel is outstanding - perfect amount of carbonation makes the beer nice and soft. Finishes lightly sweet, a bit smoky, and there’s really not much evidence of bitterness or hop flavor to be found. A very fine scotch ale!

12 oz bottle given to me by Kaggie97. Pour is a slight hazed ruby orange copper with a 2 inch golden tan head. Aroma of grainy earthy malt, sharp peat and dusty / dirty floral heather type sweetness. Sweet is muted, mostly about the big malt and peat. Taste is the nose, with big grainy malt and peat, followed by a bright floral heather sweetness. Hint of alcohol in the back, though this complements the peat nicely. Palate is medium, perhaps a tad lighter than I was expecting. Nice active carbonation makes this one easy to drink. Thanks for this one Kevin.

12 ounce bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours a very cloudy dark amber color with loads of particulates swirling around. A sweet nutty toasted nose, fruity malts. The taste is very good; sweet toasted malts, fruity, caramel, light smoke. Very drinkable and warm. Very tasty.

Shared bottle ( 12oz ) with a generous friend. The aroma from the reddish-orange amber yet hazy brew was surprisingly sweet and roasty. If held near a light you can see and appreciate the look of the unfiltered amber ale. Most def a delicious scotchish ale. Definately a favorite.

Bottle: Poured a deep copper color ale with a large foamy head with OK retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of sweet caramelized malt is dominating with light toffee notes and some lingering smoke. Taste is sweeter then expected with loads of caramelized malt and sweet toffee with a light smoky finish. Body is quite full with limited filtration and good carbonation with no signs of alcohol. Well done though a bit sweet for my taste – bonus point for the smoke notes thought.
