Commercial Description:
This is a bold, malty, smoky Scotch Ale. It pours a deep amber brown. It was quite cloudy at the time of bottling but will clarify as it ages. The nose is full of smoky toffee notes. The taste opens with sweet malt and spice, then the alcohol comes up with a light residual sweetness on the finish. A balanced smoky flavor is in this beer from start to finish, although it never is the dominant character. It was brewed with 2-Row, Biscuit, Dark Crystal, Amber, Peated, Caramunich and Wheat malt. It is hopped early with Hallertau Tradition and late with Hallertau Hersbrucker. We fermented DR8 with a traditional Scotch Ale yeast. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer. This beer was inspired by Phillip Kaufman’s winning entry in the 2009 Big Batch Brew Bash.

Bottle: Poured a deep copper color ale with a large foamy head with OK retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of sweet caramelized malt is dominating with light toffee notes and some lingering smoke. Taste is sweeter then expected with loads of caramelized malt and sweet toffee with a light smoky finish. Body is quite full with limited filtration and good carbonation with no signs of alcohol. Well done though a bit sweet for my taste – bonus point for the smoke notes thought.

Bottle coutesy ericandersnavy. Pours a reddish amber color with off white 1 finger head. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of earthy peat, light hints of chocolate, caramel, some light spice. Flavor is smoky wood with notes of some raisins and figs, fresh dirt, caramel, light notes of chocolate. Medium body with smoky malt finish. I’ve had better scotch ales.

Bottle ( 12oz ). Shared by garthicus with me and blankboy. Hazy orange-amber with an average frothy tan head. Aroma is sweet and roasty, citrus, grain and alcohol. The taste is almost sweaty-pungent, musty bitter spice balancing the sweet caramel. Slick, slightly boozy mouthfeel, weakly carbonated; pungently spicy in the finish. nice, weird, but nice.

Bottle from ericandersnavy. Damn this is friggin good!! Amber pour with a creamy light tan head. Great peaty aroma with roasted nuts, caramel, and some lightly perceptible fruit. Flavor has a remarkably delicious peaty aspect with some nuts and lots of caramel malt. Damn good. Really good.

Bottle thanks to Cletus. Pours hazy deep amber with a large yellowish beige head. Lighter than expected. This is more a "Scotch Whisky" ale than a "Scotch-style" ale... very peaty and smoky and earthy and a bit rubbery. Funnily enough, my reaction on first smelling it was "What is that?... Oh, it’s Scotch." Surprisingly, not as sweet as expected... in a good way. Nicely balanced. Unique and quite good.

Thanks to Blutt59. Appearance: Light orange/brown with a small brown head. Aroma: Alcohol, peat, nutty, quite vinous with a good deal of sweetness. Flavour: Nice and smoky, wood, peat, lots of malt and sweetness with a bitter alcohol finish. Nice.
