Commercial Description:
This is a bold, malty, smoky Scotch Ale. It pours a deep amber brown. It was quite cloudy at the time of bottling but will clarify as it ages. The nose is full of smoky toffee notes. The taste opens with sweet malt and spice, then the alcohol comes up with a light residual sweetness on the finish. A balanced smoky flavor is in this beer from start to finish, although it never is the dominant character. It was brewed with 2-Row, Biscuit, Dark Crystal, Amber, Peated, Caramunich and Wheat malt. It is hopped early with Hallertau Tradition and late with Hallertau Hersbrucker. We fermented DR8 with a traditional Scotch Ale yeast. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer. This beer was inspired by Phillip Kaufman’s winning entry in the 2009 Big Batch Brew Bash.

On tap at the Draught House. Sweet and smoky. Nice at first, but after about 4 ounces I didn’t want any more and it was just too sweet. eh...

Bottle from ericandersnavy. Thanks a whole lot guy! Pours ruby orange with a five-finger off-white head. Smells like creme brulee. Medium body with virtually no carbonation. Really smooth caramel with peachy notes. It is one of a kind. Tobacco notes. After a long time - smoke. Where was that?

Bottle shared by bhensonb. Pours into a thistle glass with a reddish brown color, a massive beige head and an alcohol aroma. The flavor is smoked malt with an emphasis on the smoke, and a strong alcohol sensation. There is also a bit of fruit and tobacco. I really like this one.

Pours dark amber-brown, appears very cloudy. Aroma of biscuit, caramel, and dominate with alcohol with notes of earthy hops, smoke, and vanilla. Body is full, with a thick and creamy texture. Taste is dominated by alcohol, followed by sweet, smokey malt, and a finish that brings a bit of bitterness that reminds you its a beer.

Bottle. Hazy amber with a longlasting off white head. Fruity aroma with light smokey and peaty notes. The flavour is sweet malty with some smoke and fruit. Soft and creamy texture. Pretty nice.

bottle courtesy of a trade, pours a rich hazy mahogany with a medium tan head. Aroma is burnt brown sugar and raisins with some yeast. Tasty toasted malt and green raisins mix with brown sugar, plum, and a smoked peated malt. Really nice flavors going on, mildly creamy with small pockets of carbonation. Really nice brew!

another one shared by rusty on 9/27/09. coppery brown color with a slight haze and a small off white head. big blast of toasted pecans and walnuts in the nose... followed by sweet malt, chocolate, warm smoke and some fruitiness (not 100% on which?). the flavor is nutty, grainy and sweet with added notes of chocolate, earthy spice, toffee and smokiness. a light bitterness comes in on the finish to help everything move off the palate. it is medium bodied though seemingly thinner and dangerously easy to put away. alcohol is drying while the carbonation is creamy and smooth. 7/3/7/3/15/3.5

pours an amber hue raped by a sensual red gleam and smothered from above by dense & frothy light tan suds. nose has notes of cherry twizzler, brandy, unripe plum, and mildew. flavors are sweet and candy like with fruity essences along the lines of plum and other dark fruits. Some licorice and cherry noted as well along with a peaty smokiness. Medium bodied, with adequate hopping and warming alcohol. Its nicely refined and warming and seems like it will still get better with age.
