Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

Copper in color with a thin off-white head. Aromas were of piney and citric hops with a hint of caramel malt. In the mouth it was medium-bodied with lots of hoppy dryness and bitterness, especially toward the finish. There is enough malt in the midpalate to give it balance but this one certainly shows off the hops...as it should.

A very traditional IPA. Quite a well rounded IPA. The aroma is of flowers and citrus. It pours a light caramel color with an off white head that gives off that great floral nose. The flavor is very hoppy, spicy, very spicy.Over all, a nice IPA indeed.

(bottle - thanks Swalden_28) Very slightly hazy gold with white head and some lace. Mild pine/floral hops aroma. Flavor is very nice - balanced biscuit malt and citrus/floral hops flavor. Excellent traditional IPA.

Draught. Pine and citrus nose. Cloudy but bright copper with a thin head. Opens full bodied with strong dry bitterness, rounds out into grapefruit rind aftertaste. Good hop presence with a solid malt background Very drinkable.

The only negative was a cloudy pour with some bits. Unsure if it’s the dry hopping (don’t know if it’s filtered). Out of the gate there is a wondeful citrusy aroma that greets you. Bitterness is well balanced with the maltyness and lingers just a bit on the back of the tongue. I liked this brew.
