Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

The only negative was a cloudy pour with some bits. Unsure if it’s the dry hopping (don’t know if it’s filtered). Out of the gate there is a wondeful citrusy aroma that greets you. Bitterness is well balanced with the maltyness and lingers just a bit on the back of the tongue. I liked this brew.

12 oz bottle, via lb4lb. Pours a slightly hazy orangish body with a tight bubbled off-white head. Decent retention and some light lacing remained. Nice crisp grapefruit hop nose with a bit of candy sweetness lurking in the background. Big grapefruit flavor as well, it’s like taking a swig of straight juice up front. Lots of bitterness, but not so much that it detracts. Some sweetness and bready, slightly doughy yeastiness on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a touch of clinginess on the finish, with moderate soft carbonation. Overall, a pretty nice drinker. Sharp and assertive hoppiness without a whole lot of distraction from the malt.

This beer poured a dark orange color. The aroma contains pines, oranges, and apricot. The flavor consists of some lemons and orange. This one doesnt bend itself too bitter, a well balanced beer. The finish is slighty bitter however. Overall a good IPA.

The beer pours an amber orange with a small thin white head. The nose is a sweet grassy earthiness. The taste is was you would expect from a light IPA with the hops coming out clearly the end is dry hoppiness.

Appearance: Pours a clear, amber body with a small, but lasting, white head. Smell: Definitely a hoppy aroma, here. Chopped grapefruit rinds and flowers soaked in pine resin. Some malted grains in the background, but it’s mostly hops. Taste: Brief caramel maltiness before the burst of citric, pithy grapefruit, pine needles, and discarded Mother’s Day flowers. Medium but substantial hop bitterness that lasts until the finish. Small taste of lemon juice right at the end. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: A decent, above average IPA from the great state of Texas.

12 oz twice-off bottle. Pours clear reddish amber color. Aroma of a sweet American IPA. Wonderful PNW hop aroma. Bold hop character sits on top of a pale malt flavor. Nice caramel, and some toffee notes. Light - medium bodied. very drinkable. Finishes more like an American Pale Ale than an IPA.
