Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

Great IPA, I am impressed with Saint Arnold on this one. I would definitely buy this one again. One of the better Texas beers I have ever tried. Way to go Saint Arnold

Bottle from Rollinhard. Pours a cloudy copper color with a big frothy offwhite head. Floral aroma, reminds me of spring. Hop flavor is subtle and balanced by a decent malt body. The hops that are there are fruity, apple kinda hops. Nice profile. Medium bodied and medium finish. Very pleasant.

Bottle from bu11zeye - thanks! This one pours a muddy orange with an off-white head. Aroma has some citrus and earth with some caramel malt and light wild berries. Flavor has a mild earthy hop taste with light caramel malt and mushy peas. Not fantastic, but a solid IPA.

Apr. 2007 - Mmmmm...yummy. Beer pours a reddish brown. Strong aroma of grapefruit. Lovely balance of caramel malts and cascade grapefruit hops. Nice smooth mouthfeel and well balanced bitterness and sweetness. Simple, but delicious.

Pours a gold to dark copper color with a tall off white head. Smells faintly of citrus with definite malt undertones. Tastes slightly of hops but the malt overpowers. Quick hops moving into some bitterness with a too sweet finish. Different.

Thanks to JDV for this one Bottle poured into my favorite pint glass produced a fingers worth of head (turns quickly to a thin lace) on top of a nice copper body Aromas of citrus and pine along with some nice flowers fill your nose Flavors of hops and pine it’s a nice IPA it has that nice bitter quality but not really a hop bomb if that’s what you are looking for more true to the style Good mouth feel a nice dry finish a little light on the carbonation Great Drinkability finished it before the review and wish I had one more

LIttle to no head on the pour and an amber color. The aroma is way too malty. There is some bitterness that comes through on the flavor. It’s a bit disappointing.

By smelling this, I would not guess IPA, but rather, bulk bin full of grain that has been sitting there for too many months. Upon tasting, I noticed there is some bitterness and am relieved, but not entirely as the old grain is still hangin out.
