Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

Pours a crystal clear dark orange-amber body. A densley packed layer of foam settles slowly to a wispy film with a prominent edge. Random spots of lacing dot the glass. The aroma shows a weird, overly sweet caramel and fruit malt base that is honestly not very appealing. Citrus hops and sugar try to cover up the strange, biscuity, lager-esque malts. The flavor takes a turn for the worse, with weak orange and grapefruit hops mixing with sugary, toasted biscuit and caramel. The body is just a tad shy of medium in stature and overly cloying. Strange brew. Hops and sugar don’t cover up its many flaws.

Bottle from lb4lb. Pours a hazy amber-orange with a lot of tiny suspended particles and a frothy, beige head that leaves light, sticky lace on the glass. The nose is a blend of earthy/herbal, floral and light citric hop aromas with a candy-sweet malt note supporting; a bit odd, but not unpleasant. The mouthfeel is the light side of medium-bodied and slick with relatively soft carbonation and a mildly dry and bitter finish. While the nose is a bit "off" from what I look for in an IPA, the palate and flavor are nice. Pale malt upfront with a quick transition to solid grapefruit and lightly resinous hops followed by lesser notes of nuts and herbs. Well balanced with a mildly lingering hop finish. I like this one quite a bit. Thanks again, Deniz!

12 oz. bottle pours a orange/yellow hue with a white head. Sweet, perfumy hop smell. Medium to full bodied with a rich, creamy mouthfeel. Has a grainy, yeasty malt taste with sweet mangos and bananas. Has a perfumy hop taste to finish. This brew has a big herbal flowery taste /smell thing goin’ on. Pretty good. Feb 2004

An OK ipa. Low bitterness and the hops are not as intense as I would like, but they are there and give some citrus and herbal flavor to balance the malt, which is on the dry side.

Bottle via trade with lb4lb. Aroma is fairly bitter with some citrus and malt notes. Pours Full copper with a creamy withe head. Flavor starts mildly bitter than proceeds to an odd metallic and somewhat cerealy character. The hops are there, but the malt profile seems a bit off. Thin to medium bodied. A tad watery. The metallic flavor just throws it off for me.
