Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

12 oz. bottle from lb4lb. Clear orange with a fading, small off white head. Spicy hops with notes of citrus over a base of caramel and toffee in a pleasing aroma. Medium body and carbonation, slight stickiness on the palate, but overall a nice enough mouthfeel. Plenty of malty sweetness to back up the hops, which show a grapefruit bitterness through an extended dry finish. All in all, a pretty decent IPA, nothing over the top, and nice balance.

Bottle courtesy of bu11zeye.Pours a cloudy orangey amber color with a medium, bubbly white head. Nice aroma of fruity and resinous hops. Good flavor of fruity, resinous hops with a decent malt backbone and a bitter finish. The body is light to medium with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation. Interesting but not mind-blowing.

12 oz bottle. Clear orange brown with a pale tan head. Bready citrus with a bit of caramel. Taste begins with grapefruit pith and club soda. Some lime. A little soapy, a little bitter. Sort of different.

Mostly clear coppery amber with a nice thin lasting head. Aroma is citrusy, cascade hops- slight earth and metlalicy with some herbal, floral and almsot tea-like hops. Nice flavor- modest herbal and light citrus hops, with a crackery light sweet malt backbone- cereal- metallic and moderate bittering hops- dry finish.

How come every IPA needs to give the damn history of the style, maybe they think it makes them cooler. This brew isn’t cool at all, like most other St. Arnold, this is a metallic tasting brew with nothing special. Exactly what they say it is though, a traditional IPA with nothing special about it. Pours light amber with a lot of carbonation, but little to no head. My bottle had a TON of crap floating in it making it hard to pour. Not bad but, I probably wont be buying this one again.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye: Pours a clear copper color with an off white head. Aroma, floral and citrus hops throughout with some pale doughy malt notes in the background. Flavor, pale malts, bready, with some sweetness, a floral hop finish. There is a mild bitterness to it. Not bad.
