Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

On cask at the Gingerman:
Golden hazy cascading effect on the pour with a super creamy guinness like head that lasted the entire beer. Smell was very nice, bold fresh fruity hops. Taste was more than averagely hopped for an IPA, piney, citrusy, and resiny with minimal sweetness. When left to sit on the tongue, the carbonation was almost non-existant (due to it being on cask) I’m guessing I’d like this better bottled, or on draft and I’d definitely like to try it again. A good hoppy IPA worth trying, without a doubt.

On Cask @ Gingerman Piney aroma. Mouthfeel is incredibly dry with some linger hop resins in the finish. Pine/Juniper hop notes.

This bottled brew from a rating party on Dark Lord Day poured a large sized head of foamy fine to medium sized ivory colored bubbles that were and left behind a transparent softly carbonated orange brown colored body and thick foamy lacing. The mild aroma was hoppy. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of hops and mild caramel. A decent one that I would consider having again.

Sampled at the Flying Saucer in Houston. I sampled this right after the Dogfish Head IPA and both were equally fantastic beers. Although I enjoy IPAs, normally they are too hoppy for me to enjoy. This beer started hoppy but finished with a smooth mouthfeel. Worth the trip to Texas.

Smells like every IPA out there, like a giant pine cone/sappy/some sort of plant-y thing. This actually caught me off guard, seemed to be bitterer than the typical normal IPA but didn’t knock you out of your chair like most double IPAs. This is my favorite style and I can’t get enough of all the bitterness. This one seemed to have a slight syrupy/medicine taste at the end and a bitterness that never ended. I would name my favorite IPA as slightly more smooth and maybe more sweet. I won’t be afraid to buy these again if I’m feeling like an IPA.

Had this a while back and forgot to rate. I remember being extremely impressed with the nose. Very nice aromatic hop presence. The aroma was a little misleading because this was more balanced toward the malt side than the nice hoppy nose, but it still did not disappoint.

Pours a dark orange color more like an esb. Small foamy head. Tastes more malty than hoppy which is not my taste. Not that great, would not reccomend.
