Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

Stanky and sour aroma full of caramel malt and english hops. Light bubblegum. Hazy amber in color with little head. Very malty flavor, rich and caramely, with a dose of mostly floral and herbal hops. Lingering sour apple and faint hop bitterness. Almost an american style amber. This would be a nice tap microbrew but bottled it needs a bit more oomph. Thanks markus.

poured an amber color with small white head, very nice aroma and a strong flavoring hops/malt combination but it was a little weak in the bittering hops. It may be that I am expeting an American IPA at this point though.

Thanks go to bu11zeye for this Texas beauty. Poured a clear effevescent amber with a fizzy white head. Really fruity aroma with big notes of tangerine and perhaps a bit of grapefruit... really, really tangeriney. Flavor is refreshingly dry and bitter with notes of bitter grapefruit, a bit of that tangerine, and perhaps some pine, with just a shade of dry toffee in the finish. An easy drinking IPA that doesn’t try to overwhelm you but offers nice floral and fruity hop flavor and a refreshing bitterness that acts as a beautiful session companion. Nicely done.

Bottle courtesy of Cornfield. Thanks Carl! Fruity sweet aroma. Hops are present in the nose but not overly pervasive. Very cloudy amber with a thin whispy layer of slightly off-white head. Not much lace. Hop profile is much more prevalent on the tongue than in the nose. This is an excellent beer with nearly perfect balance. Somewhat breaks down mid-glass. Too softly carbonated. I bet this is nice freshly out of the tap. As it is, a very solid effort and well deserving of its top 20 ranking for Texas brewed beers.

Decent IPA. Not as hoppy or overpowering as some other IPAs. Slightly thin and carbonated mouthfeel. Not as complex, but still very flavorful.

(Bottle) Pours a light amber color with some light haze. Nice head and good lacing. Hops in the aroma, but not as strong as I expected. Taste was similar, with some berry notes mixed into the citrus. I liked this beer, but a little more in the way of flavor could have made it a lot better.

12oz bottle, lots of large, suspended yeast on the bottom. Pours buttery gold with a smallish, pervasive head. Aroma is very fragrant, lots of sweet floral notes, maybe a touch of pine. The flavor starts with a nice maltiness, followed by an initintially intense, but short lived bitterness and floral and piney flavors. The finish is resiny and there is a lingering bitterness. Good stuff, thanks Tim!
