Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

Attention: All recent reviewers of this beer are wrong! It is way better than it’s getting credit for recently. Starting with a beautiful copper (almost amber) pour with a big frothy off-white head that really beckons the prospective drinker. The nose is largely a moderately restrained grapefruit and pine resin hoppiness. The initial tasting is a moderate caramel and toffee malt...but very quickly followed up by a fairly robust bitter bite that lingers longer in the aftertaste than one might have expected. I really enjoyed this one...and it, without question, deserves to be placed at the very highest level (of second tier IPA’s)! Although I agree with Cornfield that it realy is more at home in the big APA catagory!

An unremarkable pour procures a copper-colored body with a melon tint under not much of a fizzy head. Pink grapefruit, green grapes and a touch of armpit in the aroma with a mild dusting of caramel malt and an evergreen Renuzit air freshener. Grapefruit hits the tongue with a carbonated tingle, but alcohol dries the flavor quickly and leaves the impression of a ginger ale. There are very few malty notes to take the edge off what I estimate at 74 IBUs... so this will impress all you hopdaddys and alphachicks. (I need a new word for "hophead". Hopaholics. Humuluslupuluslovers. Hoppophiles. Yeah... hoppophiles...)

This came recommended from a beer-savvy drinker and Austin resident ("Eric") I met at Ginger Man in Austin. Ginger Man had previously had this beer on cask, which I’m a bit sorry I missed. This beer out of a normal tap was OK, but not very much like other IPAs I’ve had recently (from Texas or elsewhere). I’d recommend either the Pale Moon Rye or Live Oak LIberation, based on my limited exposure to Texas-brewed beers. Appearance was a sparkling dark amber, and a bit dark for an IPA. The beer had a solid finger of head on it. Aroma was assertively malty, particularly for an IPA. Taste was also very malty up front, with some light hop character (Cascade?) at the finish. A rather fruity ale, but not really in the same conversation as other IPAs I drank that night. Mouthfeel was a bit on the heavy/sticky side, which seemed inconsistent with the beers very light hop taste.

Tap @ brewery: Huge head, good lacing, big bubbles. Bitter aroma, hoppy, just hops, not tempered by malts. Hoppy bitter taste, somewhat tempeped by the malts. Malty, somewhat bitter taste. But bitter as it warms up.

Damn this is good. Being a hophead, I always come back to this one. Nice color, and creaminess. nice citrus throughout. The best Texas beer ive ever had. Its availability makes it a true classic.

From the bottle this pours an orange/amber body with a slender head that soon fizzles to nothing. A light caramel sweetness supports scents of pine and grapefruit, none too strong. The hop bitterness slightly intensifies in the flavor, a mild earthiness joining the mix. Mildly bitter finish. More like a big APA than an IPA.

12oz bottle via trade with decaturstevo. Aroma: honey, grapefruit, light pine, and some earthy hoppiness. Appearance: Light amber in color and lightly hazed. Off-white head was full and foamy with good retention. Good lacing. Flavor: Light biscuity hops, grapefruit, pine, floral, and earthy hops. Some oxidation present. Medium bitterness was nice and refreshing. Medium-dry finish. Palate: Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Overall: Pretty average for an IPA, and a little oxidized on top of it. Maybe it’s better fresh.

Bottle. Pours an orange gold with a decent head aboard. Nose is grapefruit. This one is fairly bitter throughout. There is some sweetness somewhere deep in the background but overwhelmingly just bitter without much else going on. Not balanced at all. Thanks to 123456green for the bottle.
