Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

Cask at Flying Saucer, Addison. Poured a lightly-hazy medium amber with a creamy white head. Nose picked up light citrusy sweetness and lots of candy... came across as very sweet. Flavor found sweet grapefruit, mild diacetyl, and a moderate level of pine and floral bitterness... some toffee at the base. Lighter carbonation from the cask, but still came across as creamy on the palate. Enjoyed it!

Light amber, citrus and spice. A decent IPA but not spectacular, I don’t feel like writing an in depth description. I bought a six pack, but a single would have done the job. A little too bitter with not enough hop or malt flavor.

Okay, so I had this cask-conditioned first, so I’m a little biased, but I also had it in bottle to rate it properly amongst other IPAs I’ve had. Pours a nice dark reddish orange, which is pretty dark for an IPA. Aroma was slight to me, but had a good harmony between caramel and hop scents. Taste was great! Nutty, brown sugar, almost grainy feel, and kinda breadlike. The hops finish things out incredibly smooth. The flavors are held together better than most IPAs I’ve ever had. If you’ve had the bottle before, you gotta try this cask-conditioned. Unprecedented smoothness in an IPA. This is kind of beer that will get Texas slightly less laughed at in the brewing world.

An orangish amber pour with a slightly off white head that fades quickly leaving a lite lacing. An aroma of hops is all I got. A flavor that is sweetish malt with hops prevalent. The palate was pretty full and smooth. A well balanced well done beer.

12oz bottle acquired in trade with OhioDad (thanks!). Poured a medium to deep amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of grapefruit, all around citric, and lightly spicey. Tastes of citrus, pine, and light caramel. Nicely bitter with a light, underlying sweetness.

Bottle (12oz). courtesy of blankboy. Hazy bright amber with a smallish foamy white head. Juicy aroma of sweet (not sweetened - ripe/sweet) ruby grapefruit, some herbal resin character, solid malt, hint of apricot tartness. The ripe ruby grapefruit really comes out in the taste, very jiucy, medium-long finish, not too bitter - really nice. Average body, although it drops off a little early, very lively body, nicely astringent - another solid, easy-drinking IPA. Thanks, Paul!

Copper in color, with a good head. Flowery aroma, with a good balance of hops and malt. Finish is a bit tart.

12oz bottle via trade with 123456green! - Thanks Louis! -Pours cloudy amber with a good sized offwhite head that laces pretty well. Aromas of biscuit and caramel malts, and some spicy, citrus hops. Flavor is quite a nice balance between sweet caramel, and biscuit malts, and good grapefruit and pine hops. Also a touch of spiciness too. Finish is quite bitter and citrus. Good body and adequate carbonation. This is a pretty nice IPA and probably my favorite that I’ve tried from this brewer yet.
