Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

Appears a rust toned amber with a lush, 2 finger white head of fluff that slowly fades out. Solid rings of lace are left around the glass. There is some particles just held in suspension near the bottom of the glass with a few large CO2 bubbles slowly rising to the top. Smell is biscuity, with caramel, with some pine notes and grapefruit. Taste is equal to the aromas with caramel, biscuit, and hops coming together with a sweetness and bitterness that are toned to the right mix with no overkill from either. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, sweet up front, fluffy, and slightly airy along the palate with just a hint of marshmellowy smoothness that turns a bit grainy as it gets to the back of the tongue. As it warms and gets towards the bottom of the glass, it becomes more candy-esque and a little less bitter. Not a bad brew.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber, almost caramel color with a scant white head that quickly disappeared. Nose was a pleasant citrusy hop blast. Tasted great - hops really came through with a nice bitter finish. The mouth feel was the only downside for me - it wasn’t as full as I expected. Overall a really great IPA.

Cloudy tawny amber body. Aroma is lemon and floral grasses. Flavour is a grassy heaven with fresh orange juice. Minutely chewy, possibily form some crystal malts. A great little IPA

Bottle: Mmm, good. Poured clear orange with a very small white head. Citrusy hop aroma, very juicy and fresh smelling. Flavor is juicy hops, orange, light pine in the finish. Finish is moderately bitter. I really liked this one. Outstanding.

Pours a very clear amber. Head is standard IPA, thin film that covers the top of the beer after you allow it to recede after pouring. And as much as i love hops i didnt think a Texas beer could do what I wanted correctly. I was wrong. This beer is in your face right off with a piney slightly floral hop aroma very yummy smelling to a hop fan. Flavors develop slowly first is just a clean smooth soft mouthfeel that transitions into an amazing blend of piney and floral hops nice bitter finish. The malt strain used here does a great job of presenting the hops without upstaging it. I’m amazed a beer this good came out of Texas. Mad Props from the Northeast, this is a serious IPA.

Light red. An initially sharp hoppy taste that fades with a citrusy taste. It had a strong aftertaste that was a little too much which made the beer only ok.

dark colored IPA - a deep amber hue. Complex aroma that smells diferent with seach sniff, though not always pleasant. aroma: perfumey flowers, spiciness, pine nuts, latex, dried apricots. crisp beer with a biting bitter finish. flavors: vegetal/spicy hopiness, lots of grass clippings, pine nuts. Aroma lingers unpleasantly in my nasal cavity. Tastes better as it warms up, a little past cellar temp. I’d like to try it on cask.

From bottle, May 2006. Amber color, a little dark for an IPA. Pours with a nice head. Not a great aroma, not necessarily too bad though - a little rubbery, a bit like how my hands smell after I’ve changed the tires on my bicycle. Decent malt backbone from the maris otter base malts. A nice touch of malt sweetness, without too much caramel; a pretty dry finish. British style hopping strategy, spicy, tangy, slightly grassy. The bittering hops do taste better as it warms up, don’t drink it too fast. A good IPA. Thanks Tom!
