Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

Amber copper gold, no head, light lacing. Nose of fruity citrusy hops and a bit of malt, fairly hop forward. The flavor is balanced, nice body and a good amount of bitterness. Finishes creamy and full flavored. Nice.

Thanks Walt! Pours a golden brown color with no head or lacing. aroma is weak- with hints of caramel and hops. Flavor is hoppy and grassy. Actually a very enjoyable ipa, goes down smooth and easy.

Pours with an amber body topped by a thin head with little lacing. It’s slightly sweet yet bitter with a nice grapefruity hop note and a touch of floral notes. Meidum bodied, smooth and slightly dry.

I was surprised by this one. Expected something close to a pale ale... nope. Pours a murky floaties-rich orange with no head, but bubbling carbonation evident. Bottle of questionable age though - I’m pretty sure it’s been on the shelf a number of months. Nice grapefruity hop aroma. Taste is a pleasant bitter orange hop, with a bit of malt - nearly hints of a light barleywine. Mouthfeel has a slight thickness to it. I like it, and would love to get my hands on a fresh bottle. A worthy Texas beer. Can’t wait to drink it again.

Bottle courtesy of Legion242. No head. Orange-amber liquid. Good marks for a nice hoppy aroma. Light malt flavour balanced well with stong grapefruity hop taste. Lasting hops. Sort of a middle ground between the UK and PNW style.

Draught. Nice nose and look to this beer as I had this one at the Flying Saucer in Fort Worth. Great citrus and hop aroma and the flavor is very well balanced with hop and malt sweetness. If I had more time I would have had a few more of this one. Nice brew.

Hey, a Saint Arnold beer that actually satisfies. Light coppery body is a bit hazy with a little bit of sediment. The head is smallish and fades fairly quickly. After the more mellow Saint Arnold beers I’ve had, I was a little surprised at the fairly aggressive hop aroma. The malt could handle a bit more body, but is strong enough to keep the beer from falling into an overbalanced hop water like some of the more irritating IPAs out there. Not quite top tier IPA, but still a solid offering. Nothing to sneeze at and worthy stand by beer status if it were available around here.
