Commercial Description:
A traditional India Pale Ale, the Elissa IPA is very hoppy with a properly balanced malty body. Elissa has huge hop additions in the kettle that give it a wonderful bitterness and is then dry-hopped in the fermenter to create the pleasant floral, hoppy nose. Our reverse osmosis water makes the bitter very soft with no harsh notes to it. The maltiness is derived from British Maris Otter malt. Its rich flavor stands up to the hops that would otherwise dominate this beer. The Elissa is an authentic version of the IPA style which was first brewed in the late 1700’s in England for transport to the British colony of India. The high level of hops combined with higher alcohol levels worked as preservatives to keep the beer good over the long voyage to India where conditions were not conducive to brewing. This beer is named after ELISSA, a tall ship now moored in Galveston. Ships like ELISSA were used in transporting IPAs to India. Saint Arnold is donating a portion of the proceeds of this beer to the Galveston Historical District for preservation of this ship.

Light amber in color with a small off-white head. Aroma of citrus hops. Flavor starts bitter, with some sweetness, bitterness is sharp and lingers unpleasantly.

In the bottle at the Huber Haus IPA tasting. Beer pours amber with an off-white head. Has a musty-chocholatey aroma. This one has a harder palate as it really bites the tongue. Burnt flavor. Sweet finish. Good lacing. Blooms late.

Brownish orange with a small white head. Grassy, citrucy aroma. Very smooth actually, and a nice bitterness throughout. Flavor is quite sweet with a definite hop presence. Quite nice.

This is a very decent IPA. It has a good balance without being overly hoppy.

This beer has a floral aroma that gets a citrusy as it warms. The appearance is a dark hazy amber with a creamy off white head. This is an incredibly smooth ipa that leaves the bitter flavor from start to finish. Nice creamy mouthfeel as well. Nice IPA from St. Arnold in Houston.

Bronze colour. Lots of citric hops and some resinous notes, but not as extreme as I was expecting. Relatively refined and subtle for a US IPA, almost subtle. Even-tempered and easy drinking, with a moderately bitter aftertaste. Not aparticularly big beer in US terms but I like it. Bottled at the joet gathering, January 2005.

Thin off-white head of fine bubbles. Creamy on top. Very light carbonation. Nice hoppy aroma. Some floral and fruit. Maybe some mango. Color is a slightly cloudy dark amber. Sharp citrus bitterness. Little grapefruit offset by a nice roasted grain flavor. Quite good. Sightly tart palate. Finish sort of dry and a little bitter. A pretty good IPA. Thanks to robanion for this one.
