bhensonb (4187), Woodland, California, USA Jul 15, 2008 750 ml. bottle, corked and caged, from Bottle Trek. The cork put a dent in the ceiling. The foam tried to escape the bottle. Hazy amberish color with a tan head that went up and down quite quickly. Aromas of cola, raisins, treacle, and light stone fruits. Medium plus body with creamy carbonation. Flavor matches the aroma. This stuff is really complex. I get a bit of chocolate towards the finish. Think there’s a lot of sugar, but it’s not sticky sweet. It’s not bitter, but there seems to be spice that offsets the sugar. It’s really good ale. I just had Fantome Black Ghost, and truly I think this is "better". MIght feel different on another day. Or not. Or to put it another way, who are these guys? brewandbbq (269), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Jul 15, 2008 Pours hazy amber with a four inch head of beige. Several minutes is needed for the mass to subside, leaving behind a smeared webwork of lace.
A mix of porous and dense foam has admirable retention throughout.
Aromatics lead off with caramel, raisins, toffee, tart cherries, dark rum, and clovey phenols.
Traces of vanilla, pepper-studded lemons, and
brown sugar follow through.
Medium bodied and creamy. A slight chew to it, and tacky.
Caramel-laced fruit and cocoa start the pallet. A warming spiciness steps forward along with a trace of tartness and more raisins.
A firm vineous note becomes apparent as the brew warms, as well as warming alcohol.
Finishes slightly rummy, with traces of citrus and spice underneath.
Nice beer..Drinks like a small quad, as long as the slight tartness doesn’t turn the brew lactic.
beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jul 9, 2008 Clear dark golden pour with almost no head. Aroma of spices and malt with some sweetness. The flavor is mostly sweet, there’s some malt and spices in there too and a touch of fruits. The body is light with an oily texture and gentle carbonation. ucusty (1871), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jul 8, 2008 Hazy orange pour similar to caramel. Yeasty aroma. Very fruity beer with notes of cherry, tart apple, grapes, and oranges. Quite a complex beer giving way to honey, and a nice sour funk. very refreshing on the venice beaches south jetty on the 4th trappist glass and all. You can only get away with that a couple times of year.! looks like the forth is one of them. KNOW THAT! Perkeo (318), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 7, 2008 "Idiosyncratic" in spades. Topnotch "kicklectic" florida take on a Belgian new school micro, not really ever sour but with decent aftertaste-extending acidity but more citrus like, a short spike of under ripe tropical fruit...oh wait, I mean over ripe star fruit. Yeah. Rambling aside, I like this alot, it’s got "heart", the most elusive of beer qualities, pretty much in spades, right up there with Bink and La Rulles and maybe even....FANTOME AND/OR DOLLE. Yep. TheEpeeist (1429), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 4, 2008 25.4 oz bottle. Cloudy garnet brown with a super foamy, smooth beige head. Nose is sour cherry, floral, oak and toffee. Lively, tickling carb gives this a pleasant airy quality without being watery. Taste is apple and toffee with yeast, honey and hints of citrus. nimbleprop (819), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA Jun 26, 2008 Scored this via trade with daknole. Many thanks! Champagne bottle pours a translucent reddish, amber with a sudsy, slightly beige head. Plenty of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. Looks a bit like carbonated apple cider. Aroma is very fruity, apples, oranges, honey, grapes and some spice. Flavor is similar, grassy, green apples, some belgian candy, honey and a touch of grain. Finish has a ton of carbonation and a little bit or sweet and sour that’s almost unidentifiable. Too much fruit, too much carbonation, could be refined a bit more. kiefdog (1567), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 25, 2008 75cl bottle from Jans Wine and Boos #2 (Tampa, FL). Rated on 3/19/08. Pours a caramel amber color with thin off-white head which dissipates quickly to near nothing. Aroma is toffee, bread, hints of caramel, honey and sweet fruit. Taste is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, honey. Earthy barley flavor initially that transitions to a smoother, sweeter finish.
