Aurelius (2469), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jun 3, 2008 Powdery, peppery, apricot-fruity aroma. Great label, moderately cloudy applesauce color with a three inch head in an hourglass pilsener. Spicy and herb-floral - tastes like marigolds, notes of turmeric. Very light vinegar. Medium light body, spritzy mouthfeel that starts getting slippery as the CO2 burns off. Finishes out with black pepper burn. Enjoyable and unusual. Market Square Liquors, Killearn.
ratman197 (2278), Arvada, Colorado, USA Sep 3, 2008 750 ml corked and caged bottle poured a cloudy peach with a lasting creamy white head. Aromas of melon, tropical fruit, pepper and light straw. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of pepper, melon and light straw with a smooth dry peppery finish. BelgianBeerGal (904), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Sep 2, 2008 Corked bottle via dchmela. Very Belgian style Saison, which I like. Cloudy gold colour with a white head that dissolves quickly. Aroma is fruity and spicy at the same time with some brett mixed in. The flavour was nice until the finish, just a little dryer and more alcohol than expected. Still good though. michael-pollack (1396), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 30, 2008 750ml Bottle: Aroma of citrus, yeast, tart lemon, spices, and a little pepper. Cork blew as soon as the cage came off. Poured yellow/urine/gold in color with a very big, rocky, foamy, white head that shrank but lasted throughout. Hazy. Sparkling. A few small particles. Ok lacing. Flavor is complex, medium sweet, and lightly bitter. Tastes of citrus, spices, artificial sweetener, vanilla, pepper, citrus, and tarragon, lemongrass, lime, and plenty of yeast. Medium body. Somewhat chalky texture. Average to lively carbonation. Sweet, yeasty finish is a bit dry. Crosling (1645), Loveland, Colorado, USA Aug 29, 2008 Light orange color with a well lasting foam.
Interesting aroma, with hints of ginger and other spices, orange and a hint of cork. . Flavor is heavily spiced and doesn’t have much yeast derived complexity. Dominated by spices, it’s almost like a pumpkin ale, not a saison. Poorly balanced. I like it ok as a beer, but it’s a poor saison.
Brigadier (887), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Aug 29, 2008 750 ml bottles
After almost having my eye taken out by an eager cork I waited for the gushing to stop. Finally it was safe to try this fabulous saison which I wish was available in Ohio. Someone needs to start working on that as soon as the brewery has the capacity to expand again. I’d buy it if that were the case. You should too.
Aroma / Appearance - A white one finger head settled above a carbonated cloudy body. Banana, wheat, cloves, peppery spices and a strong funk melded into a very solid combination. It reminded me of a slightly aged Jolly Pumpkin beer.
Flavor / Palate - Thick and dense the mouthfeel contained wheat amongst funky undertones. The only flaw was a little medicinal aspect in the middle. After that it redeemed itself with a great orange finish. I wish all saisons were done this well. If so it would be a style that I’d drink much more often.
