Commercial Description:
The most delightful way to enjoy Saku Porter would be in front of a fireplace or in candle light during those long and dark winter nights. This beer keeps you warm all through the coldest time of the year. Saku Porter is the ideal accompaniment to roasted meats and game. The fact that porter is also perfectly suited to light various desserts, especially those containing chocolate, may not be that commonly known. The ideal serving temperature for Saku Porter is rather high, 12–14 °C, a typical quality for dark beers. Saku Porter, a unique dark beer with strong taste, is brewed of water, caramel, light and coffee malts, hop and yeast, however, only once a year – for Christmas. Similarly to classical porters, Saku Porter is a strong (alc. 7.5 % of volume) full-bodied beer. A special jewel to Saku Porter is its high, rich, brownish foam.

didn’t look much like a porter. no opaque look to it at all. instead it wasw a deep brown yet clear enough to be considered translucent. sweet caramel flavor but very watery. bland malty aroma.

(Bottle) A very pretty porter in my glass. Aroma is extremely liquorice and the flavor is wuite bitter. It’s very rounded though and nice.

This bottle was bought in Estonia, the alcohol is 7.5% and it is labelled something like “vintage 2004”.

The colour is pitch-dark. The pale brown foam fills almost the whole glass, but it sinks down with a fizzing sound into a two finger thick head.

A roasted flavour dominates the smell, but there are also notes of candle grease, some spices, sweet malt and hints of alcohol and smoke. It is not 100% pleasant.

The carbonation is medium strong with small bubbles. The mouth feel is creamy.

The taste is unexpectedly mild and simple with roasted notes, some sweetness, over boiled vegetables (cabbage?) and margarine. There is no alcohol in the taste whatsoever. The aftertaste is somewhat unbalanced with a strong bitterness and roasted malt. It is surprisingly drinkable considering the alcoholic content.

Well I’m not sure this was a porter, but it was alright. Some caramel malt sweetness from an amber coloured, thin mouth-feel, easy-drinking beer. There was some fruitiness (raisins, plums) and some mild sweetness in the finish. Not robust enough to score high as a baltic porter but a nice ber.

Light brown in color with a thin tan head, this has a caramel aroma with traces of chocolate. Medium-bodied, it’s a straightforward, near dunkel kind of a drink, despite its being a Baltic porter with a stronger abv. Uncomplicated, with a burnt caramel flavor and a mildly sweet finish, it is, nonetheless, a fine drink.

Bottle at Fall Beerfest In Toronto 2004. Deep amber in colour. Aroma of christmas cake, caramel and raisins. Flavour was of caramel, some light malt, plums, light hops. Light body, mild carbonation. Finishes a little on the light side but still an interesting beer.

I have a soft spot for Baltic Porters, and while this isn’t really a sophisticated beer, it’s got a good nose and flavour that reminds me of bread pudding. Not bad.

Bottle at Dougshoemaker’s, dark amber, aroma of bread, raisin, and plum, nice taste of raisin with a hint of hops, followed by alcohol.
