Commercial Description:
It took 2 years of brewing, tasting and testing to come up with the final recipe for Sam Adams Light. We focused on brewing a flavorful, high quality beer with a light-bodied taste and fewer calories. Sam Adams Light is a unique beer, it's not a lighter version of our Boston Lager. Sam Adams Light is the only light beer that uses no adjuncts and a traditional brewing process to ensure a balance of flavor and light-bodied taste. No other domestic light beer uses only the four classic ingredients of beer: pure water, lager yeast, Noble hops and barley malt. The quality ingredients that make up Sam Adams Light include two-row malt and some of the most expensive hops in the world, Spalt Spalter Noble hops. At 128 calories, Sam Adams Light features a clean finish and no aftertaste.

The idea that these guys offer a light beer is comical, but I guess the market needs another one, so here goes... pours an orange-copper body that boasts a thick, two-finger head that does not look light.... sweet, malty bouquet; bright and a bit punchy, but still leaves a beer drinker a bit wanting.... body is sturdy, but not heavy--in fact, its lack of hops melows the mouthfeel to an actual light beer approximation--highly drinkable...the obvious absence of hops creates a vacuum--I know this isn;t supposed to be a less caloric version of the lager, but the malt doesn’t bite either... pleasant, with prerequisite thinness and smoothness... did Samuel Adams have to use the silver label as a joke or a jab? as a light, I’d defer to these guys on name alone... the beer is meant for sudsing whatever carbs and grilled proteins you’re eating anyway...

Bottled:
The waiter didn’t give me a glass so really don’t know anything ’bout the appearance. I’m a bit surprised to see that other raters often describes it as "amber"; it sure didn’t taste amber. The flavor was thin, fizzy and tinny. Only a slight touch of caramel hinted that it wasn’t Miller Lite I was drinking.

Amber pour from a 12oz bottle. Malty aroma, good flavor of malt with a touch of hops in the finish. Good palate, especially for a light beer. At 128 calories per bottle, this is in the middle between a light beer (96 calories) and a regular beer (150 calories.) So – they achieve more but are less true to the light tradition. Good beer, stick with the Ultra is you want to keep your weight and carbs in check.

Bottle. Pours a pale golden body with a white head. Very subtle malt with a light floral earthy hoppiness. Thin body not much in the way of flavor or aroma.

Bottle: Deep bronze with a creamy light tan head. Very mild aroma- diacetyl, caramel, and light sweet doughy pale malt notes. Light fluffy feel. Apparent diacetyl in the flavor. Butery and sweet all over with light caramel and papery pale malt. Not much bitterness or hop character to speak of. Eh.
