Commercial Description:
The intensity of this unfiltered brew is immediately evident with spicy, herbal notes of sassafras, wintergreen and licorice. These are balanced with the sweetness of caramelized sugar, molasses, and vanilla.

Bizarre flavors here. Spices and herbs hit taste buds that is closers to the offertory nerves. This is a bit unsettling. I can’t even see my self finishing a whole bottle. Not very enjoyable.

This smells like root beer barrel candy. Tasted a little different. A decent beer and an interesting idea.

(bottle - 12 oz) Orange in color with a fizzy tan head. Aroma is very spicy and sweet. Lots of anise, molasses, sassafras, and mint. Flavor is very spicy and minty as well. Lots of spearmint and sassafras. Tastes a little like toothpaste. The finish is very spicy and minty as well. Odd to say the least but very interesting and historic.

(07.05.06) 12 oz brown bottle from Bierkraft, Brooklyn, NY. From a 4-pack Samuel Adams historical beers (beer 4 of 4). 5.5% ABV. Labeled as best before 10/2006. Licorice (or anise) nose. Poured hazy red amber with medium off-white head. Soft carbonation. Medium bodied ale that starts with root beer/herbal/spicy sassafras flavors. Some licorice and oil of wintergreen flavors. Ends with spicy flavor. Spicy characteristic was a bit overwhelming and medicinal, making this beer nearly undrinkable. My least favorite beer of the four historical beer pack.

This beer is different. Pours a thin fizzy orange amber with a tan film for head. The aroma is a spicey, minty, rootbeer. The flavor is a bit syrupey sweet, yet it remains thin. Flavor seems artificial. There’s very evident sassafras, which gives it a gritty feeling, anise, minty, tea leaf and almost a rubbery aspect. It’s very different, but it’s not so good. However, you sip it again out of curiousity.

Very sweet smelling - candy like. The appearance is not bad, dark amber with particles. The flavor is anise, vanilla, sugaree not what I would call a beer - if I considered it a root beer I would say too much anise. Leaves nothing for the palate, hits the middle of the tongue but doesn’t leave any taste.

Pours a cloudy brown with very little head. A strong herbal aroma lead by an overabundance of licorice makes for an almost interesting smell, but makes it nearly undrinkable. It got easier to drink as I went along, but it never reached anything I’d describe as enjoyable.
