Flavor is very herbal with a a "root beer" aftertaste (among other herbal tastes). I stopped after a few sips. But I agree with stoutchap - good on Sam Adams for trying something different. | 1.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 1/10 | 2/5 | 4/20 | Sep 22, 2006 Bottle; Aroma had some root beer, most dominant aroma was mint and spice. Had some sluge on the bottom of glass along with a brown murky body. Beer had some flavor of root beer but for the most part flat carbinated soda water. Had a sticky dry film on the palate like after a candy root beer barrel. This wasn’t good should of poured it out but hard for me to waste a beer so I finished it. Aroma has dry root beer, light, dry licorice. Flavor is abound with a bunch of adjuncts that just don’t add up to anything good. It is very herbal (wintergreen?) and a little sweet with root beer soda, but it is not to my taste. stoutchap (297), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 7/20 | Sep 18, 2006 Hmmm . . . to quote a recent comment of my brother re. somebody’s cooking, "Well, it’s tasty, but not to my tastes." It’s all there mint, licorice, a sweet root beer nose and flavor, and also an interesting (not necessarily good) taste that makes one think, of, well, roots. No really, it had this strange wood-like flavor. Again, I applaud Sam Adams on their originality and willingness to color way outside the lines - but ultimately not my style. | 1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 2/5 | 2/10 | 1/5 | 3/20 | Sep 16, 2006 12 oz brown bottle, best before Oct. 2006. The $10 mixed 4 pack.
Hazy amber with lots of clumps, perhaps it should have been filtered.
The aroma is just wrong. Smells like Crest vanilla mint toothpaste. That’s actually a good toothpaste, just has a bad cap.
This beer however is not good. Anise starts to rear it’s ugly head as the beer warms. That, combined with the vanilla and the wintergreen is just weird.
Flavor was even more discombobulated.
Vanilla, mint, liquorice, molasses all there but not together in any way.
I have a feeling this recipe was tested by pregnant women with odd cravings.
Imagine vanilla ice cream, with wintergreen certs and black jelly beans mixed in, topped with a drizzle of molasses. awful.
I need to go scrape my tongue with a wire brush.
Like the lars teeten or acid cigar, someone will like this, it’s just not for me zhandolf (5), USA does not count | 1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 1/10 | 1/5 | 1/20 | Sep 16, 2006 Bottle, dark brown smells of licorice extremly overpowering i couldnt stand to take another taste..needless to say this is a definate drain pour im almost scared to try the others that came in this gift set despite what others are saying.. | 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Sep 15, 2006 Dark brown, copper tinted beer that is very cloudy. The aroma is very herbal, licorice, birch, some mapley aroma and also a strong cough syrup aroma as well. Falvour is very strange, herba, earthy and licorice with a pretty astringent finish. Interesting, but this just doesn’t do it for me. Tastes like a mix of cough syrup and cream soda. Couldn’t finish it.
