The first wiff of the bottle is great, smells just like A&W but let the beer sit and a faint medicinal odor comes through. The flavor was so bad, I had to spit it out. No kidding. Flat and earthy, but in a bad way. If this is typical of a beer from 1790, I know why my ancestors drank whiskey. hotstuff (3175), Indiana, USA
| 1.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 5/20 | Jan 28, 2007 Bottle. Small head that quickly dissipated with no lacing, hazy, and an orange brown hue. Nose was licorice and sassafras and ditto for the flavor along with some dryness. Bubbly mouthfeel. Light body. Bad aftertaste. Nice try but it was anything but tasty IMO. | 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jan 17, 2007 A bit cloying, honestly.... Pours a deep amber, with tons of yeasty "floaties" into the glass... Just like most offerings of the Patriot Pack, this contains a diminished, nonexistent head. The nose is of fresh root beer, licorice and fresh (belt) leather... all within the mix of silage and sourmash. The flavor is simple: a rootbeer brew incorporated with licorice, dry in flavor, with a dry, salty spearmint finish. The remaining salt turns into bitterness in the end. The mouthfeel is medium, but does not overcome the ultimate salty finish of this offering. Unfortunate really, because this could’ve been so much more, and achieved results with few aspect changes. As it stands, it starts off nicely enough, but ends "not cute"..... muddy, earthen and of a salt-lick. markas101 (580), Fargo, North Dakota, USA

Some root beer flavor but a bit too upfront on the palate. Worth a taste but likely won’t be revisiting this one. Heathen (810), Riverside, New Jersey, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 15, 2007 Bottle. Smells like root beer. I guess thats the sasafrass & licorice. Tastes beeter than the hard colas that were out a few years abot that I always thought tasted more like root beer than cola. More molasses & maple syrup came out in the aroma and flavor as it warmed. I don’t like regular root beer very much but this is less harsh. It’s not much like beer, but not as bad as it could have been. Poured a medium brown with an average-sized, off-white head that mostly diminished. There were small to average size particles with average to thick density. The aroma had molasses, sasafrass, honey, licorice, cola and very light vanilla. The flavor was much of the same but I didn’t notice the vanilla. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and the finish was heavily sweet with some light biterness and short duration. The body was medium. RedHaze (370), Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA

Pours a dark, somewhat hazy, amber with a one finger head that fades quickly to a thin spotty cap. The subsequent lacing is thin and disorganized.
Smell; this has a very strong sassafras smell, along with some mint and mlidly herbal aromas. A somewhat minty smell comes out after I let this warm a little. On the initial sniffs I thought this didn’t smeel to bad, but the mint has me worried.
Taste; sassafras is definitely present as it dominates the first couple of sips. After those initial sips some mint/wntegreen makes an unwelcome appearance, as well as a lot of licorice. I like a little licorice, but this was too much for me. As with the smell, the first couple sips weren’t that bad, but it just fell apart after that. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, and the drinkability just isn’t there.
While this beer has a lot going on in the aroma and flavor, most of them are very hard for me to deal with. I appluad Sam Adams for trying something different, but this one just wasn’t for me. Rockinout (946), Kent, Ohio, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 2/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jan 14, 2007 Huge licorice pine wintergreen outdoor medicine aroma. Taste is somewhat sweet with a minty anise bite. Though I did not like the taste so much, I do appreciate the brewers’ attempt at history. I just hope it tasted better back then.
