Poured a dark brown with some auburn notes in the light. Not much khaki head. Aroma was quite nice with a lot of smoke and roasted malt; a bit of caramel and sweet malt as well. Flavor was alot like I remembered it; roasted malt, a nice tasting caramel, chocolate, molasses, with a general sweetness. Quite good overall, with a nice after taste. Definitely good for the style. poisoneddwarf (223), Rathdrum, Idaho, USA

Sometimes Sam Adams lets me down (see Sam Adams Light, Boston Lager, Pale Ale, Winter Lager, Hefeweizen, etc.), other times they just blow me away. This is one of those instances. For a brewery this huge, I think it’s admirable they’re able to crank out quality like this. If this didn’t say lager on the bottle, I would totally say it’s a stout. It’s very reminiscent of English porters and stouts, like that which Samuel Smiths brews. I’ve had this beer many times before, but I guess I’d forgotten how good it actually is. Pours opaque black, revealing a reddish hue only when held close to a light source. Taste is of sweet (at first) maltiness, leading to a slight bitter aftertaste. Nice and creamy. Delicious. yemenmocha (428), Glendale, Arizona, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 18, 2009 Beautiful black beer. Light brown laced head.
Very faint nose on this bottled version. maybe it’s just the glass shape. Some roasty malt notes, a sugary sweet smell too.
Medium bodied, carbonation is very noticeable, very tame malty sweetness that leads into a somewhat "thin" finish. Very drinkable, as in you could really down several of these fast, but not extremely appetizing (you don’t crave the next sip).
A very good evening session beer when you want that malty lager that will go down fast. Fratto (766), Arlington, Texas, USA

Roasted aroma that was quite similar to stout. Beer was rather malty and roasted with very nice chocolate and caramel notes. Slightly bitter taste which was more noticeable in the finish. Was also lightly fizzy.
Overall this looked very good even if the head was not fantastic. Nice aroma and a great taste which was very well balanced. Another fine brew from the Boston Beer Company. Also one of the few Schwarzbiers available in Ireland which was a big plus.

Pours deep copper, beige head.
Aroma of roasted malts, some light elements of smoke and peat with caramel and hints of fruits.
Flavor, some sweet lactic malts, god caramel and light chocolate.
Some bitter hops to be noted with hints of spices, dark fruits; currants. Overall mouthfeel retains plenty of caramel with very faint touch of smoke.
